Title: Missing uncles from 1901 Census.
Post by: josephinemary on Monday 18 April 22 11:40 BST (UK)
I have found all my family except 2 uncles.
Horace Brown born 7th March 1883 Conisbrough, Doncaster
Newman Brown born 1st Jan 1886     :        :             :
Searched all records for 1901 census but cannot find.
Any ideas very welcome. Think they would have been somewhere in Yorkshire.

Have you found any marriages for them?
Have you found them on the 1911 census?

Yes to both questions but the events were after 1901

Could they have joined the army? 2nd Boer war was around that time

Both brothers married women from Coalville, Leicestershire so it might be worth looking that way, Horacee also had a son born 1908/9 in Coalville.

I think the two brides were sisters and the daughters of Horace and Newman's mother's sister.

All I am wanting is to find out where they were in 1901.
I already have a very comprehensive family tree showing the brothers marrying sisters. Took me years to sort that out but have now got photos etc.
Why can't my family be "normal"?

Had their parents died ?
Could they have been with relatives . ?
What were their professions ?
It may help find them in 1901 ?

Did Norman have a middle name could he have used that in 1901. * Apologies misremembered your uncles names
Should be
Do Horace or Newman have middle names ?

You said your tree is comprehensive so if you found them already in 1911 it would help to give details you know that we don't .like names of wife's and children and professions

Have you looked into the idea of them being in the army at that time ?

Agree with LizzieL.

A lot of young men who were around in 1891 and then 1911, but not 1901 were more than likely in South Africa at the Boer War.

Although those two look a bit young to be doing that. Towards the end maybe.

Suspect a misspelling of name as your reply. Causes more problems. A family member once told me that he played for a Sheffield football club but not sure how to access such records for 1901.
Still trying folks. Very happy to know that I have a lot of eyes on this puzzle. Many thanks.

Have you tried local papers to see if they have reports of football matches?. I was told an ancestor was a founder member of Wakefield Trinity rugby club. I found reports of matches in local papers. He was an early player, but not quite at the beginning, but family story mostly true

All three Sheffield Football clubs have websites with contact details. Maybe you could try contacting them direct and see if they have any information on early team members

Oh sorry I was getting mixed up with a Norman Horace Brown of my own .

Yours was Newman Brown which is quite unusual anyway without the addition of a middle name .

I have a book which lists all the players in the football league since it's inception. I'll see if I can find anything but it will be later on today.

I've looked through the alphabetic listing with a magnifying glass but no Newman. He could have played for one of the clubs but not in League matches  :-\

PS - the alphabetic listing includes players who played for any league club
