William was bapt Sep 10, 1815 in Lamerton, Devon, s/o James Northcott + Prothesia Huggins
Ann was bapt Oct 10, 1813 in Treneglos, Cornwall, d/o Richard Venning + Ann Spettigue
William and Ann married in 1839 in Bradstone or Bradstowe, Devon. He was of full age, a bachelor, his residence was "Fieldown Head" and his father was James Northcott.
Ann was of full age, a spinster, her residence was "Fieldown Head" and her father was Richard Venning.
1) I have much info regarding the parents (William Northcott + Ann Venning) but would like to locate their deaths or burials.
2) I'm trying to find marriages for any of their children other than youngest child Richard who eventually went to Ohio, USA and died there.
3) Also, which of their children was the parent of James Northcott born about 1863 in Torquay. (He married Eleanor Woodward in 1891 in Newton Abbott registration district and they moved to Ohio, USA)

possible birth regs for James
James Northcott june qtr 1864 Newton Abbott vol 5b pg 137 mmn Tancock
or
James Hornsbery Northcott june 1864 Newton Abbott vol 5b pg 160 mmn -
This family appears to account for the James where the mother's maiden name is Tancock
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q276-TVM3
birth regs for other children have same maiden name
So, birth reg for the other James shows him to be illegitimate and likely the son of an unmarried daughter.

Thanks so much!
I was thinking that he was the son of an unmarried daughter and since they had 3, I'll have to do some more hunting because after the 1861 Census, I can't find any of them :(

I wondered if this death reg could be Sarah?
Sarah Northcote 28 dec qtr 1867 Newton Abbot vol 5b pg 95

Sarah Northcote 28 dec qtr 1867 Newton Abbot vol 5b pg 95
Yes, that looks promising since the last time she appears is the 1861 Census in Torquay and she could be the mother of James Northcott born about 1863 and that would explain why he's with his grandparents in 1871 and 1881 Census.
Mind you, she also had sisters Elizabeth born 1842 who is also a candidate and Mary Ann born about 1845-46 to a lesser extent as she'd be 17 yrs old when James was born.
I found a "possible" death for Ann (Venning) Northcott but if it is her, wonder why I cannot find her in 1891 Census?
Name: Ann Northcott
Age: 81

That address for 1871 is HELE Gasworks, St Marychurch.
William Northcote was buried in Torquay Cemetery on 21st August 1884 aged 71, address given as 5 Church Street.
No Sarah buried there.

Thanks for correcting the 1871 address for me and for giving me William's burial in Torquay Cemetery. Wonder if wife Ann was buried there or any of their other children?
Went to Find A Grave and it hasn't been added but I found various cemeteries for Torquay so am confirming that it's literally "Torquay Cemetery" and not listed on FAG as "Old Cemetery" or "St Mary the Virgin Churchyard."
For a non-British person like me, I've seen via Google that St Mary Church is a part of Torquay - is that correct? For family tree purposes, if a person says they were born in St Mary Church back in the day, that's what I've been putting.
Thanks again!

William Northcote was buried in Torquay Cemetery on 21st August 1884 aged 71, address given as 5 Church Street.
Found a marriage for daughter Mary Ann Northcott (I think) to John Ellis Hobbs in 1868 and they had only 2 children: Mary Ann Hobbs 1868 and Robert Edward Ambrose Hobbs Nov 1870 (Ambrose part possibly for Mary Ann's brother Richard Ambrose Northcott).
John Ellis Hobbs died 1st March 1913 in St Marychurch
Mary Ann Hobbs was buried 26th Sep 1901 in St Marychurch
Would they possible be buried in Torquay Cemetery or would St Marychurch have a different cemetery?
Thanks again!
-
To clarify- Torquay, St Marychurch & Cockington were three completely separate places until they merged in the early 1900s but even today are looked on as different places.
As to burial places-
St Marychurch - the grave yard attached to the Church of St Mary the Virgin (the parish church)
Cockington- has burial registers but no known grave yard.
Torquay- the grave yard attached to the church of St Saviour. (the parish church of Tormohun, now the Greek Orthodox Church of St Andrew)
Torquay also had a burial ground attached to the Church of St Mary Magdalene (the parish church of Upton, Torquay)
Torquay Cemetery opened in 1852 for non-conformist burials, and 1854 for Consecrated burials.

Thanks Terry -- your explanation helps clarify things for someone "out of country" - like me.

It's funny because I recently found a promising marriage for Mary Ann and began to actually wonder if she might not have been James' mother!!
Mary Ann Northcott
John Ellis Hobbs
Registration Year: 1868
Registration Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration District: Newton Abbot
Volume: 5b
Page: 261
Since it turns out that she WAS James' mother, that could explain why he was with his maternal grandparents while she was with her new husband and children:
1) Name: Mary Ann Hobbs
Baptism Date: 30 May 1869
Baptism Place: Exeter, St James, Devon, England
Religion: Anglican
Father: John Ellis Hobbs
Mother: Mary Ann Hobbs
2) Name: Robert Edward Ambrose Hobbs
Baptism Date: 12 Jun 1872
Baptism Place: Torquay, St Marychurch, Devon, England
Religion: Anglican
Father: John Ellis Hobbs
Mother: Mary Ann Hobbs
YES, that James Hornsberry looks very promising as a potential father!
Thanks so much Mabel :)

In a way it's both. The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin is the parish Church of St Marychurch. That is where
HOBBS Mary Ann was buried:- 26 September 1901 age:- 55 notes/address:- Mount Pleasant where:- St Marychurch
The only Ann Northcott in Torquay Cemetery that fits your dates is this one:-
Northcott Ann 66; Hoxton Road; Torquay 24 December 1897 81 4241-C-PR-1-4 1084 8671 Consecrated Torquay Cemetery; Torquay Devon
