Title: Workhouse Location
Post by: liverpoolgenealogy on Saturday 16 April 22 19:18 BST (UK)
Hi,

Could anyone decipher the attached image? My ancestor entered the Liverpool Workhouse in 1869, and stayed there for 22 days. The writing in the image is under the heading 'where located'. Of the other entries on the page, I couldn't see any that had a similar place listed, most of the other people had 'medical' written in this column, so it certainly refers to their location in the house rather than where they otherwise lived.

Thanks.

Thank you both for your replies. I also though it was 'cleaning' but I didn't really think this made sense. All the other entries on the list were wards within the house, e.g. 'medical', 'fever' and 'aged woman', things like that. My ancestor was male too, but I'd have imagined 'cleaning' to have been something done by female inmates in a workhouse during these times?

While it doesn't describe the purpose of a "cleansing Ward", this article refers to one in the Chester Workhouse.

Quote
"The inspector, it was stated, handed in a report describing their neg- lected condition, and Mrs. Dugdale (the por-teress) admitted them to the cleansing ward of the hospital."

That's a great find! Thank you! I think it probably is cleansing then!

Thank you all.
