Title: British births in Egypt 1890
Post by: spark on Sunday 10 April 22 08:44 BST (UK)
Dear Chatters.,

Asking for advice on where I might find info/certificates etc to continue research back.

I have a Madeline Louis Vivien Mendham dob 26 Jan 1890 Cairo, Al Qahirah, Egypt
On marriage certificate (1911) Father is Harold Mendham Army pensioner.

To date I cannot find any trace before marriage on ancestry /FindMyPast / National archives/censuses etc

Any thoughts on where to go next in terms of birth certificate, parents, military service of father?

Thanks,
Spark

Have you found Mabel Mendham in the 1911 census?

Age 22, born Cairo

As you've no doubt found, there is no record  of an army pensioner named Harold or Harry Mendham in the right timeframe. So the father's name would appear to be fictional.

That is what I was fearing, but wanted to put it out there to see if more eyes could see something I could not.........

Well the name seems to intimate towards a French origin, so perhaps born to a French dancer and a British soldier who gave said name which may not have been accurate :o.

Dear All,

Been talking to a very distant relative, by chance.  Apparently she came from Suffolk after falling out with the family.  I'm wondering if Mendham in Suffolk is the village she was from?

As for birth names/surname/dob who knows.  I guess this is one for DNA to solve, but I am not on this branch.

Thanks for all your inputs.

Or perhaps the father was a Harry/Henry/Harold from Mendham :)?

Is her birthplace Cairo/Egypt on the 1921 census?  If so - I would think that is more reliable than info from relatives?

No birth found in England

So both 1911 & 1921.  Presume the Al Quahirah is from 1921 so very specific.  I would be inclined to believe her version

Where did Al Quahira come from in your opening post?

That I have now deduced was from when I manually inputted Cairo into my tree on Ancestry! Not in any of the documents.   Thank you again for pointing this out.
