I have heard that a MacKinnon family from Strath, Skye settled in Kintyre/Campbeltown, maybe in the seventeenth Century.
Does anyone know anything about them? My specific interest is in the Kintyre family and their descendants, although information about which branch (if any) of MacKinnon they were would be of interest.

Any christian names?

There were Mc/MacKinnons in Campbeltown in the late 18th century but how long they were settled there, I don't know. The ones I know about were sea-faring so could easily have come from other areas before they arrived in Campbeltown. Records prior to this sort of date can be hard to come by for ordinary families.
Are you trying to trace any particular names within the McKinnons?

I think lack of sources is the problem.
I have a book by Angus Martin and MacKerral 'Kintyre in the seventeenth Century', but neither of them have the answer, although I think Angus hints that it is part of the oral tradition of Campbeltown.
A possible connection would be 8GGM Catharine MacInnish m William Ballantyne. If they can be verified.
MacInnes and MacKinnon would be the same name?

MacInnes and MacKinnon would be the same name?
Not that I know of. McKenon, McKinven, yes, but not MacInnes. That has a different derivation and means son of Angus.
Sorry, but I suggest that you reconsider.

That is very helpful.
It will save hours of fruitless research.
Thank you.

MacInnes and MacKinnon would be the same name?
According to Black's The Surnames of Scotland MacInnes means 'Son of Angus' and MacKinnon is from MacFhionnghain, 'Son of Finnguine' (spellings vary).
So no, they are not the same name at all.

That being said, it would still be interesting to know a little more about the MacKinnon's of Strath in Campbeltown.

Found this passenger list for Hercules leaving Campbeltown for Australia, with passengers from Lord MacDonald's Estate.

Hi bagpipe…
Just for your interest and off-subject… I knew many MacKinnons when I lived in Campbeltown. In the meantime, when I joined the Scots Guards Pipe Band, I was friends with Alby MacKinnon, who ended up as Pipe Major. (RIP)
He was buried on Sky.
Just for your interest. …, Iain.

That is interesting, and a great picture too.
Out of interest, our family names in Campbeltown include McLean, Jordan, Ballantyne/Bannatyne, McConachy, Stewart... many of them with Irish roots. At the moment, I do not know how or if Skye fits in, or how it all relates to MacKinnon. If at all.
