I am researching my ancestors Hugh Farqhuar and Jean Wilson, who I believe married c 1750. They had 3 children, John, Jean and William, who were born at Riggfoot farm, 3 km from New Cumnock Ayrshire Scotland 1751-1755. It is proving difficult to trace further back from both Hugh Farqhuar and Jean Wilson as there are so many family branches apparent online.

I’m guessing that you have you checked the records on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk because the children you have noted are on the site.
I cannot see a marriage for Hugh & Jean but there are possible baptisms for them at New Cumnock.
FARQUHAR HUGH HUGH FARQUHAR/JANET GEMMELL 16/03/1718 New Cumnock
WILSON JEAN JOHN WILSON/JEAN WIGHT 29/06/1729 New Cumnock
Also this not to far away.
WILSON JEAN JOHN WILSON/VIOLET MCAULD 16/09/1724 Old Cumnock

going by Col's post

the tree owner only has Jean Farquhar b 1753 - no other children - which makes me think Jean is an ancestor of his .- he goes back to
Thomas and Lady Mary Farquhar born 1410 in Montrose - a couple of Laird of between Thomas 1410 and Hugh b 1718

Thank you both for your time and comments. I also thought that Hugh Farqhuar and Jane Gemmell were the likely parents of Hugh, born c 1720.
The possibilty of John Wilson and Jean Wight being the parents of Hugh's wife Jean is intriguing. The first two children of Hugh and Jean were John and Jean. Were they named after their maternal grandparents ?
Was there a usual practice of naming children in a certain order? For example, was first born son named after father's father and first daughter after mother's mother.

See here for Scottish naming patterns (scroll down).
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/guides/forenames#Forenames%20and%20naming%20patterns
It is also common to find surnames of ancestors (mostly maternal) used as middles names. This can be very helpful in tracing the family back through generations.

These are Hugh’s siblings on SP. I do not see a record for Jean?

HUGH 16/03/1718

You may already have had a look at the "Cumnock Connections" website. If not, you may find it of interest as it contains a substantial amount of information about the local Cumnock/New Cumnock areas.

you are absolutely right Roisin - I normally start with - "not all trees are correct " but I didn't in this instance :)

More good ideas for me to follow, especially Farqhuar families in Galston, which I gather is not too far from New Cumnock. Suggestions are much appreciated.

What are the names of the children of John, Jean & William, sometimes there are clues in younger generation families?

Moving on 200 years, my Doctor during the 1960's was a Dr.Farquhar who had a surgery in Oswaldtwistle Lancashire, could he have been related to you?
