Title: Searching for Andrew (Anthony) Ferrie. Born abt 1871 Donegal
Post by: getstarted on Saturday 26 March 22 21:43 GMT (UK)
Parents. Godfrey Ferry & Mary O’Donnell
9 children Patrick, Mary, Andrew, Michael, Francis, Godfrey, Hugh, Bridget & Alice. I have been able to find birth & death for all children except Andrew.
Anthony married Mary McBride in Scotland & I have the marriage certificate

The family immigrated to Canada in 1913 from Dunbarton Scotland. One of the children Catherine McBride Ferrie ? was my grandmother.

Any information about Andrew would be welcomed. Thanks
Leslie

Hugh Ferry also immigrated to USA. Hugh was living with Andrew & Mary in one of the census.

I have not looked at the missing children. Not sure what it is.

The 1911 census says there were 10 children. You've listed only 9 but not found Anthony/Andrew's birth registration. I only found 6 children in civil registers. It might be that baptismal records will give a more complete list of the family.

It's the church records you need to check once you've searched the civil registrations thoroughly.

Thank you
I have the information on Andrew’s family once they arrived in Canada. Andrew died of the Spanish flu in 1918. He worked the mine in Trail, BC.
I will look for the missing child for my records thru the church.

The marriage certificate does state his parents and his birth name could have been Anthony. I know names were often changed or shortened. My grandmother was Catherine McBride but her records all state Kate.

It would probably have made things easier if you told us all the details you already had found. Yes, nicknames (like Kate for Catherine) aren't uncommon but Anthony/Andrew for the same person is not. However, maternal grandfather was Anthony.

Let's start with a possible birthdate. Luckily parents married in 1864 so he was likely born after registration of births. From Canada we now have two different years- 1860 and 1870. What ages was he in Scottish records?

I have seen the grave markers but all other documents point to a 1870 / 1871 birth. Passenger list for immigration in 1913 says 42 yrs. 1901 census in Scotland says 30 yrs.

I think 1870/71 is the closest.

Robert Ferrie 8
Patrick Ferrie 4
Mary Ferrie 2
Kate Ferrie 11 months
Hugh Ferrie 22 Brother coal miner b. Ireland

the marriage certificate for Anthony Ferry & Mary McBride 1895 state Spinster & Bachelor.

I think Margaret (Maggie) and Robert might have been illegitimate  I can not find anything close for Margaret 1889 but I found a Robert Mulholland McBride 22 June 1882 I think is Robert.  Mother Mary McBride Smithstone Road Cumbernauld

Only a short run of Dungloe baptisms online- (Nov.1876-Feb.1881)- only found young Godfrey
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1013
Doesn’t look like any earlier ones available-
https://www.johngrenham.com/records/rc_church.php?churchid=1013&parish=Dungloe
I also looked through the neighbouring parishes but either found nothing or records incomplete.

Had a look at the children again- parents married Nov.1864 so Patrick likely the eldest-
1. Patrick 18 Nov.1865

4. Godfrey 27 Aug.1878

baptism https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000631936#page/17/mode/1up
5. Hugh 1881

6. Alice 1886
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1886/02614/1965021.pdf

There's also son Francis to fit in as well as Andrew/Anthony but lots of gaps.

This is then the information from Mary Ferry (mother) 1911

Still cannot find Anthony/Andrew Ferry abt 1871

Then it's likely that the son Michael born in 1875 had died before 1890.
It's looking like Andrew's birth didn't get registered.

The first Michael Ferry died in 1877 at Croaghboyle (sic).
