Can anyone help please.
Looking for a marriage,
William Porteous born c1803, died 1865, ( son of John Porteous and Mary Winstanley) to
Agnes Graham born c1798, died 1873
Both interred Tundergarth Churchyard.
Known children David 1837 - 1840. Mary 1836 - 1884, Agnes (Telfer) 1833 - 1905
Lockerbie, Mid Banks, Linn Mill area.
Trying to find Agnes's family.

Ceeoh -- if you spend only 6 units on Scotlands People you will be able to view her actual death certificate in the Civil Registers. (You would need to buy more to start with - but the ability to view actual certificates, which give SO much information in Scotland, is worth it).
This should give the name of her father and mother.
On that site you should be able to find the marriage of William and Agnes in Parish Registers - (Civil Registration didn't start until 1855 in Scotland.)
-
I really wish we had the Scottish system here. The info on both marriage & death certs is far more comprehensive & a fraction of what we pay in England.
-
Oh Carole, I SO agree with you -- you only need to find a death and it takes you back a generation.
Marriage certs give you the mother's maiden name.
Then on births - you are given, not only the parents names, but the date and location of their marriage!
I love the Scottish system.

Thank you for replies.
I have in the past used scotlandspeople, and find their records excellent, usually answering all the questions asked.
Unfortunately I found it very expensive from South Africa. £1.50 for six credits for one query is very reasonable in GBP, but when it becomes +-R30 in ZAR not so reasonable. Sadly the rate of exchange is prohibitive.
For all your replies and input, my grateful thanks, query answered and appreciated.
Thank you,Ceeoh

Very many thanks.
This is a sad story I'm afraid. William Porteous was the eldest brother of my great grandfather. In the 1860s he was a miller at Linn Mill and tragically committed suicide in the mill race in 1865. Agnes and the family did not fare so well after that. I recently had a query from another source about Agnes Graham and hoped to find a little about her early history. Linn Mill is now I believe, known as Riverside Mill.
Many thanks

Can I please ask who your great grandfather was please? My husband has connections to this family, however I don't have record of William Porteous with the first child being born 1808.
Children of John Porteous & Mary Winstanly that I have found so far are
Richard PORTEOUS 05 Jun 1808
Andrew Johnston PORTEOUS 15 Jul 1810
Mary PORTEOUS 09 Jul 1812
Janet PORTEOUS 20 Jun 1815
John PORTEOUS 21 Jun 1815
Thomas PORTEOUS 06 Sep 1821
Robert PORTEOUS 04 May 1825
James PORTEOUS Abt. 1828
My husband's line comes down from Janet Porteous. Would love to share notes

Hi, my great grandfather was John 1815 twin to Janet!
He married twice.
1) Jane Hall - my great grandmother
2) Ann Lumsdon
John and Jane had four children.
Mary Ann 1841, James 1843 (my grandfather), Williamson 1845, John 1848.
Jane died of cholera in 1849
James married Mary Ann Fell. They had twelve children .
William was the first born of John P and Mary Winstanley, he is interred in Tundergarth Churchyard to the right of John and Mary's lair.
There is also another child Margaret born c1809
I would be interested to hear further of your husband's connection to the family.

I really don't understand why when an enquiry is made (with an offer to share information), the request is more than fully responded to yet not one word in reply after seven months to even say it was received.
Thankfully this has not been a previous experience for me, I have always found rootschatters friendly and so very very helpful , thank you to all you wonderful RC from whom I have over the years received so much valuable help.
Just felt the moment may give someone a stab of conscience
