Emma Jane Grant christened 6 Dec 1874 Tetbury was daughter of Samuel and Ellen Grant (Nee Barrett) 1881 Census has Emma Jane (7) Place of birth given as Northampton, living with William and Fanny Cleverley (Nee Barrett) in Tetbury. Ellen and Samuel both born Tetbury were married in Whitechapel London in 1867. Ellen (20) was a maidservant to a lady in Islington in 1861. Looking for any evidence of either Samuel, Ellen, and particularly Emma Jane subsequently. Cannot find a Registration for Emma other than a spurious one that fits her year of birth in Aston(Birmingham). Any help would be gratefully received as per usual. I've followed the obvious search routes in England. IncidentaL Emma had two older brothers Albert and Herbert who were in Gumstool Hill Workhouse in 1881. Herbert ended up in Cleveland Ohio! Albert in Ireland.Perhaps that may be a possible lead I dont know!

I think you've gone the wrong way with Albert in Ireland - it should be Alfred John. He's in service in London in 1891 then moves up to Nottingham. He serves in South Africa and in WWI and dies in Nottingham in 1934

I just want to say thankyou so much to all who have contributed for all the hard work to find the information given. It is very much appreciated. A little late for me to look at tonight but I will give it a real good look tomorrow. Thanks again. Robin.

The levels that people on here are able to achieve are way and above my expertise, I know it may sound patronising but I really do appreciate it. Going back to Samuel I cannot locate him in 1861 when he should be about 23 years old. Ellen his to be wife in 1867 was as I say in London. Also the fact that they were buried (1874) within a couple of days of each other in their mid 30's would indicate an accident or severe contagious illness I presume. Given that Emma Jane is registered (Aston District) Sep Qtr 1874 and then Christened in Tetbury December 1874 after her parents burial in November 1874 would point to some kind of sudden demise. I guess the only way to find out is to may be get copy of Death Certificates?
-
If you decide to order their death certs - order pdf copies for £7 each instead of the £11 for the “posh” ones. You get all the same info for £4 less
If Samuel was in London in 1861 - 5 pieces from the Middlesex 1861 are missing

Thankyou CaroleW for your advice...... You, along with others, have served me well on several occasions. My go to Site for help on all things Genealogy. Sadly, I do get my Alfred's and Arthur's mixed up from time to time! Im renowned for it! Sorry! ;)
-
Just realised - Emma was baptised after the death of her parents
-
Yes that is correct CaroleW.... i think something rather dreadful must have happened, as Emma's parents were buried within a couple of days of each other when Emma couldn't have been more than a few days old! Both Parents were originally from Tetbury, Glos and it would seem that Ellen's sister Fanny Cleverly(nee Barrett) took care of Emma thereafter. Emma was noted living with Fanny in Tetbury in the 1881 Census! That is also why I presume Emma's two brothers Alfred and Herbert ended up in the Gumstool Hill Workhouse,Tetbury (1881 Census).

Thankyou Osprey for this find, it looks promising being Warwickshire as the County of birth. I have seen the transcription and then the original entry on the 1891 Census and I am asking if anyone thinks that the transcription for the place of birth is accurate. Im struggling to find reference to "Bisham" in the County. Could it be a shortened version of Birmingham? Would be interested as to what anyone may think.

could be B'gham. There are some very similar 'g' letters on previous page - there's a druggist's warehouseman and others.
;)

I also thought the "s" looked more like a "g" given that when the the letter s is noted on same page it is written with no tail! I havent explained that very well but when seen you will understand what I am trying to communicate! :)
