Title: Street location 1908 Gateshead please
Post by: jacqlineue on Sunday 13 March 22 13:33 GMT (UK)
What a happy Sunday this is.  After 15 years of searching I have eventually found (with help from chat room here) my grandfathers birth certificate.  He was born at 77 Fleming Street Gateshead and I cannot find it on google earth.  Can anyone advise where I might get a picture of this place.
Thank you
Jac

It is on this map in the top left-hand corner between Milling Street and Vine Street: https://maps.nls.uk/view/120934398

On the modern map, it was roughly between Milling Court and Vine Close.

In addition to David's link, this is a side by side view with a modern day map
https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.423333333333296&lat=54.95676&lon=-1.62311&layers=168&right=osm
As you can see a lot of those streets are long gone, but they seem to have re-used the names as there's a Vine Close, Milling Court and Fleming Court on the modern map.

If you put Fleming Street into the search box on this page you may find old photos of the street

The link at the bottom of this post will take you to a short silent film of VE celebrations in Gateshead. It is about 10 minutes long and as you can read in the text intro (below), the street party scenes were filmed in Fleming Street and askew Road

As Victory in Europe is officially declared by Churchill at 3pm on May 8th 1945, an off-duty policeman captures stunning Kodachrome film of the celebrations in Gateshead - flags and bunting strung between terraces, and jubilant women and children (and a few men) gathered for street parties, waving defiant teapots after years of wartime blackouts, bombs and ration cards. On Thanksgiving Day crowds cheer on a grand civic and military procession through Saltwell Park.

Also caught in monochrome by John W. McHugh of the Gateshead Police Photographic Unit, a Victory bonfire burns at night on Windmill Hill, a public park with panoramic views over the River Tyne, gifted to the people of Gateshead on 18th November 1861, but long used for communal entertainment such as Hoppings at Whitsun in 1829. The rare colour footage of VE Day celebrations, filmed in West Gateshead down terraced streets (Fleming Street, Askew Road) since demolished, features as a stand in for the ‘mean streets’ of Liverpool at the end of World War Two in Martin Scorsese’s documentary on The Beatles pop star George Harrison, Living in the Material World (2011).

Boo, you never know what you can find 'out there' as Mulder used to say on the X Files

Thank you so much for posting this information about Fleming Street. I too have been researching it today. My great, great, great grandfather died at 110 Fleming Street in 1908. Thanks for the video clips and maps etc. Super information. Forever grateful to those who have posted.

Thank you so much for the Gateshead map. Only just today I came across information that placed my ancestors in Vine Street in 1901 and then Milling Street in 1906. Many thanks to all who contributed.
