Title: Where else can I look for a death/burial record.
Post by: MrG on Thursday 10 March 22 15:40 GMT (UK)
25 plus years I have been at this game and have never hit a brick wall like this one. My wife's much married Great Aunt Harriett Emily Bedford (aka Alexander, Brady and possibly Andrews) born 11/03/1893) seems to disappear from the records after the 1939 Register.

I have searched ERs, Deaths and Marriages (Ancestry, FindMyPast, Family Search, Free BMD and the GRO Indexes) with a whole range of Christian and surname variants.

Last spotted in Surbiton, and yes I have searched the cemetery records, I cant find anything post 1939. I would really like to "kill her off" so any ideas anyone?

Thanks

What was her name in 1939? Possibly buried with one of her husbands? did she have any children (if so might be buried with their father)? Have you tried searching for a death notice under her last-known name in case a place of burial is mentioned?

Was she married in 1939 - did she remarry after that?  Living alone or?

Is her name visible on 1939 Register? Entry for a deceased relative of mine is still redacted because he emigrated and died abroad.

I can see a marriage to an Edward Taylor in 1917 Surrey - was that her?

When do the names Alexander, Brady & Andrews appear?

OK, This is a very complicated story so bear with me. The 1917 marriage to Taylor is not her. It is in fact her younger sister who stole her sisters identity so that she could marry without her fathers consent.
Harriet married Henry Wilson Alexander, a Canadian soldier< in 1917 and Richard Brady, a printer, in 1926.
Harriett had a whole string of legitimate and illegitimate children between 1915 and 1933 - the last with Alfred Charles Alexander who she is living with in 1939 but calling herself a widow named Brady.

All of this is locked down with certificates and DNA.

I attach an excerpt from the 1939 register copy - the address is 127 King Charles Rd Surbiton.

I have tried all surnames and varients of Harriett and Emily but no luck. I have also had Kingston RO search the ERS for me but they have found nothing post 1939 either.

I have also searched emigration records as he had siblings in both Australia and South Africa but one of my wife's Aunts remembers her in Surbiton in the 40s or 50s

Sorry, should read "she had siblings..."

Thank you for making clearer for us.  We were only looking at earlier information as it was not clear to us from your initial post what her surname was when you last located her or where she was living and we were trying to work it out for ourselves  :)

Surrey North in 1963 covers a wide area.  I would suggest that you obtain his death certificate to at least help to pinpoint the area.  Plus, of course, you would have to consider cremation as well as burial!  Sorry.

Good idea. As I was writing the above that did come to mind as, if Harriett was the one who notified the death, it might move her chronology forward a bit.

There is in Ancestry a 'Joyce Family Tree' [owner 'thecrowfamily'] which has Harriett's death as Oct 1969 in Bexley.

However, there is no supporting source document attached to this entry.

By the by, I see what you mean about Aunt Ett having a very colourful life - if the news reports in April 1930 regarding her husband Richard's alleged decapitation on a railway line are anything to go by!

Thanks for the pointer to the tree but I had already spotted this and similarly been unable to find any supporting data. I have contacted the tree owner but no reply.

....and i have found another newspaper article and court case relating to an unreported still birth!

The Harriett Taylor who died in Bexley in 1969 had a birthday three months later than your Harriett.

People tend not to tell outright lies about the time of year they were born, so this seems a very unlikely candidate.

That has been my experience as well....especially as we move into the 20th C. Maybe a day or two but not months.
