Title: Fry?Childs mystery.
Post by: frankle on Wednesday 09 March 22 17:53 GMT (UK)
Samuel Childs was born in Yetminster Dorset in 1814 to Ann Childs single woman. He married Elizabeth Chaffey in 1836 and some time later he started to use the name Fry. Up to the 1861 census he called himself Samuel Childs, then in the 1871 census they started to use the name Fry.
In 1847 his son George Thomas was baptised George Thomas Childs or Fry.
Would anyone know why he would have started using another Surname? Total Mystery

The surname Fry could well be the surname of his reputed father if known to him. Not uncommon for illegitimate children to do this in later years.

Other reasons could be that his mother married after his birth and he went by the surname of his step father.

However, in both cases, from what you say, he only started to use the alternative surname in later years. Which surname did his children use in their later lives?

Possible death for Ann

This suggests Ann was the illegitimate child of Jane prior to her marrying Jacob Cheesman.
