Post by: seekernz on Friday 04 March 22 04:50 GMT (UK)

Can anyone provide any info on the nature this establishment,
Butts (or Butt street) Evening Continuation School, on the corner of Crown lane in 1856.
My granddad attended it and we have a book he received from there. COMPLETED.

I think They were exactly as the name suggests. Classes held in the evening for people who were working to continue their education.

If you google there are quite a few parliamentary reports about the, funding etc.

And lots of mentions in newspapers in the 1890s.

Added.
 Later than yours but

I think it's Ludgershall.  :)

On this 1873 map there is a school on the corner of Butt St and Crown Lane, probably the evening classes were held in the school.

A bit more detail in this one, though it's right on the edge of the map

Thanks guys, I presume the location was Rushall or Walsall, physical location of the school is of lesser interest.Family were asking what the place was about,I'm thinking the boy who was about 15 at the time was looking to enter an apprenticeship and needed some brownie points.
