Is anyone able to tell me exactly where on Bolton Rd, this fairground was likely to have been?
-
Do you mean the Market Ground?
Now the site of the Asda store

That seemed the most likely but I couldn't find anything to prove it!!
Many thanks ShaunJ

Is this of any help?

Just a thought, eileenb - you specifically refer to "1911 Fairground off Bolton Rd, Pendlebury" - where has this information come from (if it's not too rude a question)?
-
Hello BumbleB
Information/combination from 1911 Census as per copy attached by ShaunJ and my gt grandmother's death certificate which showed - where died "In a van, Fairground, Pendlebury, Swinton."
Is there a problem?
-
Apologies - no I don't have problem with the information, I just wondered where "Fairground" had come from.
OK, there is a combination of information on 1911 census - Mary Jane is a "Stallholder (at Fairs)" and is living at Market Ground, off Bolton Road, Pendlebury. However, personally, I'm not sure that that means that Market Ground is a fairground. :-\ 1911 entries either side of Mary Jane show addresses of 602 and 614 Bolton Road.

Another pointer: in the 1901 census Dudley Dyer, travelling showman, is living in a caravan on the Market Ground in Pendlebury. In September that year his abode is given as "Fairground" when his daughter is baptised.
It's the same with Thomas Dyer in the next caravan in 1901: abode "Fairgound" at his daughter's baptism in 1902.

Thank you BumbleB, point taken. I have been checking the whereabouts of the rest of the family but none of them were in Pendlebury, so no help there. However, when weighing in ShaunJ baptisms I think that is the clincher.
Thank you both for your input. Much appreciated.

Then there is Fair Street leading to the Market Ground:

And it is almost opposite Christ Church where those Dyer baptisms took place.

Thanks for that Shaun, just when I thought it was sorted !
Pendlebury is not somewhere I have ever visited, so not being too far away, I think I had better go find it.
Thanks to all for the input.

I think it is sorted. Everything, including Fair Street, points to the Market Ground.
