Title: Rasmus Romsi and her sister Susanna Romsi fom Finland
Post by: Raineri Hiltunen on Friday 18 February 22 13:55 GMT (UK)
Hi
Please help my wf and me with her genealogy backround secrets! Her daddys mother has born in USA ,Negaunee, November 1892 and has moved lately back to Finland with her mother Susanna.
What  we have found out is that Susanna moved to USA with her brother Rasmus Alfred Romsi 1899 but i cant find any information of them from American years. Finnish genealogy information tells Rasmus died  1 year after they moved to USA. He propably was working as a miner. I cant find anything of him, either.

Please send me some information if You can!
Thanks  Raineri

Hi there,
So siblings Susanna and Rasmus moved 1889
And Susanna had a daughter in Negaunee in 1892 - did she marry in the US or was she married when she was over there?
Then Susanna moved back (with or without husband?)

Who were Rasmus and Susanna's parents?

I'm really struggling to find any records of them - any birth in 1892 in Negaunee area with mother Susannah, any shipping list, etc.

Marquette County Michigan marriages.

Susanna Rampei ? age 27 married Henry Heinrickson? (clerk) age 20 on 20 September 1892 at Nagaunee
country of origin Finland for both.

This is the closest I have found.

Keep in mind it was written down as the clerk heard it.

This is Rasmus and family recorded in the household examination book from Sodankylä Parish, Finland in 1891. Last name on page.
Finns usually took their place of birth/residence as their surname hence Romsi.
Rasmus and Susanna are recorded. On the right hand side of the page the minister has written that he died in America 28 March 1890.

Hi Ian
Thats what i found out, too.

I cant find anything from their life in USA.

Would be cool to find something about Susanna´s life in America! How long after Rasmus did she live there? Where and with who did she get babygirl in 1892? Baby´s firstname was Inga Kustaa.
Next thing i found out was  that Susanna was back in Finland and married Heikki (Henrik) Heikkilä 1901 and she died 1905.
I cant find anything about Rasmus from mine accidents, too.

Do you have their moving out records from their parish to USA?
I don't have a subscription for the Finnish Church books for the later years.

Also, did they always use the Romsi surname in Finland?

Blimey! I didnt get to see Your post before i allready answered to Ian´s post here. So right now i think You have solved the case!
What i have been earlier found out was that Susanna married in Finland Heikki Henrik Heikkilä 1901.
I did know Heikki was 7 ears younger than Susanna. So this looks like Susanna and Heikki maybe had known eachothers allready in Finland and Susanna left to America with his brother Rasmus  in 1889. Maybe Heikki was so fallen in love to Susanna that he went to America and married her there and they made a babygirl together and then when they moved back to Finland they get married again to make it official here! ???
I wonder if u could write some link to see Your finds in USA marriage!

I wonder if they had no marriage certificate to prove their marriage so they had to redo it.

You don't need an Ancestry account, the marriage is free on familysearch:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N3XX-756

Person performing the wedding is listed as "R L Tolonen" but this was probably K L Tolonen, a prominent Finnish Lutheran minister in the US.
