Title: Thomas ( Tom) Moore of Castleford. Up before the local beak !
Post by: JCam on Thursday 17 February 22 15:23 GMT (UK)
I have posted this previously on the 'West Riding Look Up' section - which I think may have been the wrong place as I'm not asking for anyone to do a look up, just hoping for some hints about how to move forward. Apologies if it was a mistake.
I'm really interested in stories which have come down the family. I know that it's wise to treat them with a pinch of salt but some of mine have been very interesting and accurate. One of the stories is that my great grandfather, Tom Moore, ended up in front of the local magistrate for protesting during WW1. Tom had a pop works and a haulage business and his protest was that all his sons had gone off to war and the army(?) had requisitioned his horses and ruined his business.
As I said, I'm not sure that this story is factual and a stumbling block to further research is knowing when it might have happened. I presume that it would be reported in the local press but short of going through 4 years of local papers at the library has anyone any hints about where to start?  Where might I find the records of the magistrates' court? hopefully on line because I no longer live locally.
Many thanks.

JCam, There are various records re the " old West Riding" held in Wakefield.  Might be worthwhile using that as a starting point. Re Magistrates Courts held at Castleford, there were 2 different courts there, one relating to Castleford itself, and the 2nd was Castleford West Riding Court, which covered the areas outside the town, such as Allerton Bywater, Ledston, Methley, etc., etc.  That was even though Castleford itself and the outer areas were policed by the West Riding Constabulary.
Best of luck.

Thanks pityackafromblyth -a good starting point. I didn't know that there were two magistrates courts in Castleford. Tom was from Castleford and his business was in Temple St, so if it happened, he probably came up in front of the Castleford court.
