Especially a family called Reid

All buried at Crook of Devon Church.

In case this helps:
Dundee Courier 03 August 1931
Two aged residents of Freuchie died yesterday.
One was Miss Grace Reid, who for the past seven years had resided with
Miss Husband, Main Street. She was born in the village of Fossaway 91 years
ago, her father being the late Mr. John Reid, Aldie Farm, Fossaway.
-
There is this marriage/banns showing:
John Reid and Grizel Robertson
Marriage 13 Dec 1800 Logierait, Perth
So, is this another couple with the same names? You mentioned that John Snr died 1801? Likely because of the location of this marriage, some of the children from the list above would belong to this couple?

Many thanks everyone for all info, I will check it out.
The Farm is sometimes called Hilton of Aldie, also Backside of Aldie, East Aldie.
The Reid family were tenants of the farm for generations and "Gossip/Rumours" say they were given it for "Services" which are unknown. (Not been able to find out why)They certainly occupied the home farm for many generations without paying any rent.
-
The Grizel/Grace who was born in 1804, she went on to marry Donald Reid in 1831. I think this is her in 1851 with family and her mother:
Donald Reid 45 mason
Grace Reid 45 b. Logierait, perthshire
Isabella Reid 19
Grace Robertson 75 mother in law, Formerly Farmer's Wife b. Logierait, perthshire
Address: Allanach, Logierait
There is a death in Logierait in 1858 for a Grace Robertson/Reid aged 85. Mother's maiden name IMRIE.
I don't know if this connects to John born 1798 :-\ Likely just a co-incidence with couples' names.
Maybe his will and death cert will throw up some more details.
Monica
-
Monica you are a star.
The John Reid I had as date of death 1871 is the one you found died 2nd April 1880.
His Will mentions his eldest son John farming at Hilton of Aldie, his second son living with him and on a shared farm tenancy at Ingrie, near Lesley, Fife. his wife Ann Archibald and daughter Grace.
His death certificate states his Father as John Reid and Mother as Mary Reid M. SI Robertson, so maybe the John Reid's wife was not Grizel Robertson and I am going down the wrong road.
Many thanks for all your help.

I think it is very likely that the informant did not remember the name of John Reid's mother. It is a pain but this happens unfortunately.
You have his baptism don't you? You can view the image of this on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Hilton of Aldie -
John Reid was born about 1759 died 2nd April 1801 aged 42,
Son Henry Born about 1793/1795 who died 2nd April 1806 aged 11 years old.
Son James born 5th April 1796, Baptism 10th April 1796 and died 1st August 1822/1823 aged 26

Is this from an inscription at the cemetery?

From Scotlands People, this looks like a possible death entry for Ann, wife of John:
Ann Reid/Archibald, aged 71
Mother's maiden name GREIG
1881
444/ 40
Leslie (Fife)
Her death cert should include her parents' names....if known by the informant ::)
There is this possible entry for her birth www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYK8-229

I'll check John Reid's baptism and see if his mother is listed.

How about this possible marriage for daughter Mary?
Mary Reid and David Anderson
1859
461/ 10
Fossoway and Tulliebole
They look to have a daughter named Grace Robertson Anderson b. 6 May 1872 in Portmoak,Kinross.
Possible 1861:
David Anderson 31 Farmer Of 100 Acres Employing 2 Ploughman 1 Boy 2 Dairy Maids b. Dunning Perthshire
Mary Anderson 30 b. Fossoway
Ann Anderson 3 Months
...and 5 servants
Address: 1 Well Haugh, Dollar, Clackmannashire
Monica
Added: Baby Ann's birth, on 4 Jan 1861 in Dollar, is registered as Ann Archibald Anderson, called after Mary's mother we would think.
-
I will have a look at Mary's info.
I am a little stuck on John Reid married to Grizel Robertson
The birth certificates of the three children all born in Fossoway seem correct.
- Henry 11.10.1793 to 02.04.1806
- James 05.04.1796 to 01.08.1823
- John 04.06.1798 to 02.04.1880
John the Father was born about 1759 and died 02.04.1801 (as per grave inscription at our local churchyard. He died aged 42. But no mention of Grizel Robertson on headstone, But then again children were all very young at his death.
Can not find John's birth or his parents, or indeed John and Grizel's wedding for it to fit in with the dates of the children being born.
Trouble is Reid is a very common name in this area, so I could be barking up the wrong tree.
Think the Robertson at Logierait, perthshire may be connected, but can not quite them into the picture yet and confirm with dates.
Also can not find marriage of John Reid and Ann Archibald.
-
This entry from the OPORs here would fit with the details you have on the stone for John Snr:
John REID
18/04/1800
461/10 587
Fossoway and Tulliebole
You never know what will be on the OPRs until you look, but always best not to expect too much...
It is good that you have his age of 42 from the inscription.
I guess Grace Robertson died later. She could also have remarried after John Reid's death?
Monica
-
I am being thick - what is OPOR?
-
You are not thick ;D It is my careless spelling...meant to write Old Parish Registers...aka...OPRs.

I am struggling to find John Reid married to Grizel Robertson
The birth certificates of the three children all born in Fossoway confirm the dates and the parents as John Reid and Grizel Robertson
and the grave inscription and ages at Fossoway churchyard match up with birth/death dates
- Henry 11.10.1793 to 02.04.1806
- James 05.04.1796 to 01.08.1823
- John 04.06.1798 to 02.04.1880
John the Father was born about 1759 and died 02.04.1801 (as per grave inscription at our local churchyard. He died aged 42.
Can not find John's birth or his parents, or indeed John and Grizel's wedding for it to fit in with the dates of the children being born.
I know there is a Reid in Longierat, Perth, Scotland married to a Robertson and had children but they do not fit in with the dates above. But may be a distant relation.
-
You have got to the point now where records are getting hard to find unfortunately :-\
We have nothing on John (or Grizel) apart from the details provided on his gravestone and names he gave his sons. These might be a clue to his own father's name.
I find often that where I am able to find christenings in the OPRs for some families, I then don't find the marriage/banns for the parents.
Without knowing when John and Grizel married, it is not possible to say how important the names of his sons were. There could have been other children born before Henry.
I did see the death of a Henry Reid in Fossoway in the 1770s. There is also a Henry Reid and wife having children at the end of the 1700s in Fossoway. Could they be connected to John?
Monica
-
From Old Parish Registers I have found:-
Death - 19th December 1760
Grizel Oswald at Backside of Aldie
Death - 13th January 1752
Grizel Robertson - Grand-daughter of Grizel Oswald at Backside of Aldie
I feel sure these must be connected in someway to my research, but not sure where and at the moment can not find anymore info.
If one has a WILL that is not very easy to ready, how can one go about getting it transcribed. Felt sure you would know the answer.
Thanks
