I am looking for the birth of John Douch who was born 1822/3 in, I think, either Etchingham or Dallington.
His parents may have been William Douch & Mary Boniface, although I am not sure about this.
I am also seeking any of John's siblings or ancestors.
Any assistance with this would be much appreciated.

Hi Andrew
According to the 1841 census we only have one John Douch in the following area, but he is not at home.
Area comprising of Burwash, Ticehurst and Etchingham
John Douch, Ag Lab, 15 with Jesse Leaney and family
There is no John Douch in Dallington or suroundng area in 1841

Hi Chris
Thanks very much for all of this.
One thing does puzzle me though:
If the marriage says that William came from Lenham in Kent why would the 1841 census say that he was born in Sussex and the 1851 census give Wartling as his place of birth?
Sorry to be pendantic about this but as it relates to my direct line I want to be absolutely sure that William Douch & Mary Bonniface are the parents of 'my' John Douch before progressing any further.

Hi Andrew,
Hopefully Chris wont mind me jumping in here ;)
The licence information indicates where he was from or resident at the time of his marriage, not the place of birth, so I would think that, yes, he was born in Sussex then went to Kent, probably looking for work. I would also think that was the reason for the licence, groom & bride were from two different counties & William didn't wont to hang around for 3/4 weeks waiting for the banns to be read ;)

Hi
Thanks Jane
Agree with your comments entirely ;D
Andrew, where did you locate John in the 1851 census?

-
Jane - thank you for your advice on this.
Chris - I haven't seen the 1851 census yet so I'm afraid that I don't know for sure where John was at that time. However, by then he was married to Eleanor Pattenden and had 3 children:
Charity b1847 in Uckfield
George b1849 in Mayfield and
Charles b1851 in Mayfield
So I would guess that he was in Mayfield at the time of the census.

Here is your 1851 census entry
HO107/ 1640/ Folio 189/ Page 10 - No 1 Batts Wood Cottage, Mayfield.

........... Charles, Son, Unm, 1 month, born Mayfield
No mention of Charity though?

Hi Chris
Thank you very much - this is a great help.
Charity must have been elsewhere on census day. She survived childhood and later married and had a family of her own.

This could be totally unrelated or they could link in ;)
I have an ISABELLA JANES SANDS (born 1867) who married a WILLIAM DOUCH (born 1868) in 1895 in Hastings (his parents were WILLIAM DOUCH and MARY ANN VIDLER). Her parents were from Dallington (for more on this lot, see here ... http://cheryl2003.topcities.com/isabellajanesands1867.html )
BONIFACE is another name that links in with "my" lot ... a MARY WOOD(S) BONIFACE (born 1792) married HENRY BOURNE (born 1793) in Pevensey but they had lots of links to the Hellingly/Dallington/Upper Dicker crowd (see more here ... http://cheryl2003.topcities.com/henrybourne1793.html )
Have you tried the Boniface Internet Group (or something like that)? It's a huge online group with a huge database and I'm sure they could help you out. If you've never heard of them, let me know and I'll go hunting for the link ;)
Hope this helps,
Hugs,
Cheryl (yes, I actually made it back online ... unbelievable !!! ;) )

Hi Cheryl
I had previously come across the marriage of ISABELLA JANE SANDS (born 1867) who married a WILLIAM DOUCH (born 1868) in 1895 in Hastings. I am sure that there must be a link somewhere, but at the moment I do not know what it is.
I am aware of a Boniface site that is run by someone in Canada - is this the same one that you mention?

Not sure, but I'll hunt out the link over the weekend (both my little girls have come down sick so I might not get too much computer time though ! ::) )
