Post by: Peedee on Sunday 06 February 22 23:53 GMT (UK)
Trying to locate English census 1811 to see if Lt. John Wilton, wife Jane and daughters Ruth and Jane are in it. Found baptism record for daughter Jane in the Diocese of St Helena, Parish St James, Dec 1, 1816.  A note said Returned to England !0 Dec !816.

Very, very few census records from 1811 survive. The census was simply a head count, and the forms were destroyed after the totals had been added up. A handful are in local record offices.

Jane would be unlikely to appear as she was born after 1811

Not sure if this will help find him if this was his Regiment/Battalion?

"66TH FOOT REGIMENT (2nd Battalion)

This battalion of the 66th Foot Regiment arrived in St. Helena from England between April 20th and
May 13th 1816,
in the transports David, Martha, Retriever, Amity, Abona, Queen, Regulus"...

When was Ruth born/baptised, what was the status of John & were there any other children?

Do you know where/when John died?

I found these on the link I posted earlier although he may not be your chap...

"Adjutant. John Wilton. Died in India, 1820"

"Mrs. Wilton, Wife of Adj. Wilton, 53rd Regt."

Rosinish.  Yes, John died in India, I have that, but what I have does not mention his wife. Other children.. daughter Ruth born 1811, Rathkeal, Limerick, Ireland. That is also where John and Jane were married, 1 June !806. Jane born St. Helena, St. James Parish October 29, 1816, baptized 1December, 1816. A note says "Returned to England December 10, 1816." I wonder if they will show up in the English census of 1817, ( I goofed up earlier looking for 1811 census!) A son, John Robert was born Jan 29, 1819, Chatham, Kent, England. When Ruth was born John was a Lt., when Jane was born he was Lt. Adjutant. In 1821 Jane applied for a widow's pension. She had to prove she was his wife. The clergy who married them provided a letter saying he married them. Can't find what she received. She was still a widow when son John Robert became an ensign in the 11th of Foot (North Devinshire) 29 December 1838.

It seems likely that the family was in Ireland in 1811, judging by information in reply #9.

1817 "census". Employment statistics collated from information in baptism registers. You appear to have that information already.
