Title: Quelch Family?! - Photo Age and Cap Badge
Post by: ResearchJu on Saturday 05 February 22 17:59 GMT (UK)
Evening,  I'm just wondering what the age of this photo is.  Also what is the cap that the man is wearing?  I think I may have found somewhere that it might have been a Timekeepers Hat.   Sorry it's not a good quality shot.  Thank you.

The only badges similar to this, seem to be connected with the Merchant Navy.

Have you found him or who you think it might be on the 1901/1911 census records to find out his occupation?

Good idea!  It was in a photo album dated 11/4/1906 - which we believe was a gift to My Great Grandparents on their Wedding.  We don't know whether there were photos in it or not but presuming not.  There are lots of photos but very few were named or dated.  The Great Grandparents surnames were Quelch and Poynter so I'll have a look to see if I can work out who it is.  Many of the Quelch men were Butchers.  Thanks again.

Hi,

I posted this link a month or so back in response to somebody else's query on a likely Merchant Navy cap badge:

https://archive.org/details/merchant-navy-cap-badges-gallery/yeoward%20bros.jpg

There are over 500 examples there of different Merchant Navy cap badges but I suspect it is still far from comprehensive. And by the look of your photo, the badges there might not reach as far back in time.

Still, it might be worth having a look.

You might also consider finding a message board with a specialist Merchant Navy theme and re-posting there.

Good luck with your research.

Simon

I'm beginning to think it might be a Railway Ticket Collector's uniform.  There are no members of the family who were in the Navy during that time but there was a ticket collector.  I've looked up and they had double breasted uniforms, example attached, but I'll keep looking

I now believe this could be a photo of Robert John Thompson who was a ship engineer for Messrs Thornycroft and Co (ship builders) in Southampton.  It may have been taken on the occasion of his marriage to Annie Edith Player in 1906 which would fit with the age of the photo.  Does anyone know whether uniforms were worn by engineers?  Thank you.

This chap is an Officer in the Mercantile Marine as it was known at the time.
A ship engineer for a ship building company was a civilian.

Thanks, that's very helpful.  Although I'm surprised there aren't stripes round the wrists indicating the rank.
