I wonder whether someone could give me some information about the BURROWS family who emigrated from England to Colesville, Broome, NY some time between 1841 and 1850, please.
There is a family consisting of James 59, Sarah 60, Mary Ann 24 and Sarah 16 in 1850 who I think were in Chard, Somerset in 1841.
There is also John (possibly John H) who is 21 and living with his future in-laws, the Searls in 1850.
What I'd like to know is whether they are the same family or not - did they arrive on the same ship? Is there any indication as to the relationship between them?
Thank you for any help.

Thank you, that ties in with what I thought as far as James is concerned.
Is there any immigration record for the family that might indicate whether John was James’ son or nephew, for example, please?

Thanks Sandra.
That might match Harriet who was part of James and Sarah’s family in Chard in 1841. She was said to be 14 in 1841 and was baptised there in October 1827 to James and Sarah.
My interest in John b1828 who married Adeline Searls is that I have DNA matches to his descendants and the only way I can make sense of them is if he is the son of a John and Caroline Burrows. John senior could be a brother of the James b1791 who went to the States, which is what I’m hoping to find out. Online trees suggest John junior is the son of James and Sarah but, if he is, I’m really stuck.
Thank you again.

In 1841 they had in their household:
William 22, Elizabeth 18, May 16, Harriet 14, Sarah 7, and James 15. James is listed out of order. There are no relationships on the census.
-----------------
I think this is their arrival:
arrived New York June 16, 1845, on the James Moran from Liverpool
James Barrow, 59, a farmer
Sarah 39 wife
Betsey 20 daughter
William 26 son
Mary Ann 23 daughter
Hannah 13 daughter
Sarah 10 daughter
all English, all intend to stay in the US
[that is what Sarah's age said. It doesn't match William's birth and barely matches Mary Ann's]
There is a John Burrows, 19, on the same page of the manifest, but he is a blacksmith from Ireland. I didn't find another John Burrows on the manifest.

Finding John Barrows (1828 - 1886) on the immigration records will be difficult unless he came with known family members. Do you have him on records in England? I didn't see him with any other Burrows on the US records.

This might help you find John Burrows' arrival:
1855 Census Colesville, Broome Co NY
John Burrows, 26, England. years resident in this city or town: 4
Adaline Burrows, 27, wife, born in Broome, years resident: 27
Abraham H Searles, 52, born in Delaware Co [presumed NY State], years resident in this city or town: 17
& the Searles family

I don't think Adaline was in Colesville for 27 years if her father was only there for 17, but the important number is John Burrows'. He must have arrived shortly before the 1850 Census.

Thank you very much indeed - that is helpful. I will need to do some more work, especially in the passenger lists, which I didn’t realise were available at family search.
I think the James aged 15 on the 1841 census in Chard is probably from a related but different Burrows family - he is a male servant rather than a son, although I take the point about no relationships on the 1841. I am finding lots of Burrows children seemed to be living with other family members in 1841 and subsequent censuses for various reasons.
That applies to John b1828 - I think, if I have the right person, he is with his aunt (?) Lydia Dimond in 1841 and then missing from the 1851. If he wasn’t with James and Sarah on the voyage, I think it is possible that he is from a different family.
Thank you!

One last thought.
Online trees suggest John junior is the son of James and Sarah but, if he is, I’m really stuck.
Ancestry hints link John H Burrows of Colesville NY to a John Burrows christened 23 Aug 1830 in Saxmundham, Suffolk, England, son of a James and Sarah. I think the hints come from records that people attach to their trees. Someone probably saw the James and Sarah in Colesville and jumped to conclusions. Unfortunately they forgot to look at the 1851 census of Saxmundham which has the father James, a housekeeper, and his 3 sons: John, James, and Joseph. So the John christened in 1830 is accounted for.

Yes, thank you. I had come to the same conclusion about the Saxmundham John. If he is my John, he comes from Devon/Somerset not Suffolk.
Thanks again for your help.
