Title: James May b 1848 Bunnannadden
Post by: liqnov on Thursday 27 January 22 19:53 GMT (UK)
Good Evening,
I am researching my G G Grandfather James May b 1848 in Bunannadden. I know this because on the 1921 UK Census it tells so. I also know that James's father was Patrick May and was deceased in 1875 but I dont know the year he died. I cannot find a baptism or birth certificate that would give me James mothers forename and maiden name. Can anyone help me please?
Regards

Do you have James May on other censuses? If so, can you give details please.

Did James marry? If so, do you have his marriage certificate giving details of his
father Patrick’s occupation

Good evening,
I have James May only on the UK Census of 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911 & 1921 not on any Irish Census. He did marry in 1875 in Sheffield, UK and his Fathers occupation is "Farm Labourer"
Hope that helps but happy to elaborate if required
Regards

Just a very speculative possibility...

Kilmactigue RC parish, 4 September 1849, a James Maye was baptised for parents Patrick Maye and Nancy Ginty, the address was 'Curroughboy', possibly meaning the townland of Curraghboy, which borders a townland called Banada (8th entry down):

There is also a place called Bunnanadd(a/e)n in the townland of Ballynaraw South, also a possibility?

England and Wales census - not UK for 1921. Scotland's 1921 comes out later in 2022.

I can see that James May gives Mayo as his birthplace in 1911. The index for 1921 shows Mayo.

Does the image from 1921 show Bunannadden?

There is a published tree which shows this 1851 extract

Searching a bit more, there is this previous thread

There is a death of a Patrick May aged 59 in the registration District of Crossmollina  on 13/12/1874.  He is a servant and the person who reported the death seems to live in Doolcastle?

Thanks for 1921 info, liqnov.

Is that Deelcastle rather than Doocastle?

So he wasn't sure which county he lived in.  ;)

Bunnanadden is a small village in south County Sligo.

Hopefully we’ll get there  :)

From Family Search
‘ The Catholic parish of Kilshalvy, Kilturra and Cloonoghill is now called Bunninadden. It included the civil parishes of the same names, Kilshalvey and Cloonaghill in county Sligo, Kilturra, partly in county Mayo, but chiefly in Sligo, as well as a part of Toomour in Sligo. (The larger part of Toomour is in the Catholic parish of Keash or Drumrat.) There were chapels in Killavil and Bunnanadden (variant spelling). ’

Apologies if I am repeating information which has been posted already.
I posted this census (1851) before
https://www.rootschat.com/links/01r8g/

It mentions Lughdoon.

Here is the baptism of Mary May, August, 1843 - Lugdoon. Parents are Pat May and Catherine Callaghan.

This is perhaps the person named in 1851 - Patrick May born Mayo in Rathbaun North
1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Sligo/Kilturra/Rathbaun_North/1689055/

1911 - Pat Maye - again born Mayo
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Sligo/Kilturra/Rathbaun_North/773826/

It seems that this is the couple - both Maye - married Bunninadden church
