Title: 13th Hussars - Charles Barrett
Post by: ResearchJu on Wednesday 19 January 22 18:33 GMT (UK)
Hi, I am new to this group and looking for help.  My Great Great Grandfather was Charles John Barrett, born 6th April 1848 in Nelson Street, St Paul, Deptford, Kent.  In 1871 I think he is on the Scottish census but listed as C J Berrett, in the 13th Hussars in Edinburgh.  In 1872 he marries Frances Spence in Leeds where it appears he is stationed, as it is close to the Barracks, and he lists himself as a Sergeant in the 13th Hussars.  In 1873 his daughter Frances is born at Colchester Barracks.  in 1874 the family arrive in Lucknow, India with the 13th Hussars and his son, also named Charles, is born and baptised in Lucknow, India in 1875.  On his son's baptism Charles Senior is listed as an Orderly Room Clerk with the 13th Hussars (colour sergeant).  On 29th June 1876 Charles is found dead, aged 30 (although I believe he is only 28) cause of death unknown.  He doesn't leave a will.  I can't find an attestation for him but I think that is common if someone died in service.  I would like to know when and where he signed up and where he was found dead.  His wife goes on to marry another member of the Hussars, William Brassington.  I have looked at the National Archives records for the 13th Hussars but they don't appear to have information relating to this date period.  Any help or where I could research further would be much appreciated.  Thank you.

It doesn't answer your questions, but there are images of the 13th Hussars 1874-80 Memorial at Lucknow on which Sgt C Barrett is named.

(just in case you hadn't seen it)

Hi Philip,  Thanks very much for your reply.  Ooh exciting - no I haven't seen this - I've just done a google search to try and find it but no luck.  Would you mind sending me the link please?  Thanks very much.

Hi
Have you tried posting on the Armed Forces board?

My great grandfather was also in the 13th Hussars, but didn't join until 1879 and his service record is on one of the subscription sites.

I posted a query on the Forces board and some great people were able to tell me where he was. My granny's sisters were born all over the Uk and Ireland, so it was very useful.

Good luck
Hilary
