I am searching for the ancestry of Margaret Whiteside who was born about 1812. She married JOhn Cochrane in 1831 and they settled in Helensburgh in Dunbartonshire. Their daughter Margaret, born in 1834 is my great grandmother. Margaret Cochrane married Robert Stewart and they eventually settled near Greymouth in NZ.

Hi Robertalan
Have you found the family in the Scottish censuses to help you narrow down everyone's birth places?
If Margaret and husband John died in Scotland after 1855, their death registrations should include their parents' names (if known to the informant) to help you work back to the next generation.

Robert, I am sure you have these details but just adding here to add a little more background. Is this the family in 1841 with Margaret mother showing as born in Lanarkshire?

...Their daughter Margaret, born in 1834 is my great grandmother. Margaret Cochrane married Robert Stewart and they eventually settled near Greymouth in NZ.
Did Margaret come back to Scotland? Just wondering about this entry in 1901:
Mary A Cochran 69 Living on own means b. Glasgow
Margaret Stewart 66 Sister Living on own means b. Glasgow
Address: 70 West Clyde St, Helensborough, Row Dunbartonshire

Added: The middle initial of daughter Mary's name was Arrol. Might connect with important family surname. The other middle name surname which is showing looks to be Peter.

Margaret Stewart (Cochrane) did return to Scotland around 1900 without her husband's consent. Robert Stewart also returned to Scotland about the same time but travelled separately as far as I am aware. They both returned to NZ. Where did you find the 1901 entry Monica?

I found it on the 1901 census transcript on Ancestry. Original image will be on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

That likely sorts out John Cochrane :) His DC and last Will is on SP:
15 March 1889 - Glasgow, afterwards Inspector of Public Buildings, Master of Works Office, Glasgow, thereafter residing in Helensburgh, d. 29/01/1889 at Helensburgh, testate
John's death in 1889 in Row/Rhu gives mother's maiden name as Arnott (as we know, info is only as good as the informant gives at the time).
Likely sisters' deaths (showing as Cochran and mother's maiden name of Arroll) are Ann who died in Glasgow in 1883 and Isabella who died in 1888 in Row/Rhu.
Still no clues for Margaret Whitehead I think :-\

An unnamed Female Whieside was christened 14 Jan 1810, Gorbals, Lanarkshire
Parents Major Whiteside/Rebecca Higgison
Only possible I could see on F/S.

I am thinking that Margaret Whiteside's mother's maiden name was Pedden because two of her children's middle names were the surnames of a grandparent. I see that the middle name of the youngest child was Pedden. This is something I have tried to find on familysearch.

Don't forget to check all the different spellings for Pedden - spelling was fluid in those days
Peden, Peddan, Pedan, Peddin, Pedin etc
