I have just downloaded the latest update for Firefox and find that the background colour has changed from whire to black. This make the contents now appear in garish colours and causes difficulty in reading. I have been on to their site to seek how to revert to the original colour. Despite following the guidance I am unable to achieve this. Can someone please advise .

There seems to be an obsession in some people with "Dark Mode".
It apparently describes having everything on a screen as close to black as possible.
I would search though the settings looking for this term and turn it off. There should also be something online, but you may have trouble reading it.
I'm informed that even the venerable Notepad is being given a Dark Mode, because it is "fashionable". The code to do this will be squeezed into as little as half a gigabyte. Under WinXP it occupied 69KB; under Win10 it is over 200K.

Have you tried
Settings ->General-> Language and Appearance

You might also want to have a look at Extensions/Add-ons, and click on Themes.
Mine is set to System Theme - Auto (which makes Firefox conform to your Windows settings), but you can also choose Dark or Light, or something called Alpenglow. It's also offering me a selection called Colourways, available for a limited time, plus some other themes. Much as I like doing things a bit differently, I think I'd find most of these distracting and/or headache-inducing.

that's what I did, Arthur. I thought I'd done it through Settings though but it was Themes now that you mention it.

Though it does look as though you could fine-tune things in the section you mentioned. :)

Thanks to all for your suggestions and remarks. I have now been able to access all my information from Firefox in black print on a white background. However, the Bookmarks column is still white print on a black background as well as the very top of the screen. I am not too worried about this and I consider I can live with this.

they must have got complaints because I downloaded 12 hours after you and am pleased to say mine looks exactly like it did prior to updating , so :-
" I'm alright Jack"

I recall a change back in (maybe) November or December* and set it to System Theme, as Arthur mentions. I don't recall any change since.
