He also served in the KLR as 3228 and in the Military Foot Police P/153157. He wasn't discharged until 1919. No SWB.

It appears there was another Joseph Vernon Smith who also served with the KLR.
Service number: 39678. FindMyPast have a 1916 service file for this JVS. Born 1891. Possibly from Burnley.

His Pension card on Fold3 is next to the chap's card you are researching.

JVS' original service number with KLR was 3228. He was renumbered (241214) in 1917 along with other soldiers serving in Territorial Force battalions. Then he was given another number  P/153157 when he transferred to the Military Foot Police for home service after he was wounded.

It wasn't until 1920 that the old regimental numbering system was abolished and soldiers were given a service number that stayed with them throughout their army service.
