Hi,
Has anyone else not received any new matches for several days? I manage my mother's DNA test and usually she gets 1-2 a day but now there have been no new matches for at least 5 days, maybe a week.
I was wondering whether they have stopped releasing the results over the Christmas period. I bought my father a DNA test in November and everything was going really well until the 21st December, when the kit successfully hit the 'DNA Analyzed' step, but hasn't moved any further since then. This is very different to my mother's kit, which went from 'DNA Analyzed' to 'Results ready' in less than 24 hours.
I called Ancestry to make sure there wasn't a problem; they said it was all fine and the results should be ready soon. I was so hoping I could have the results to show my father at Christmas, but it seems like that won't be the case (unless, by some miracle, it arrives tomorrow).
I just wanted to see whether anyone else is experiencing the same problem, or whether it is just my kit.
Queenie :)
-
No, you’re not alone!
I too haven’t had any new DNA matches for over a week now.
Perhaps they’re saving them up as a Christmas present for us?
Romilly :D ;D ;)

Thanks, Romilly - that's a relief! I was concerned that my father's test had failed, but it seems like they are just going to release all the results as a batch. Would be a great Christmas present! Fingers crossed ;D
Queenie :)

Mine is showing 22 is the last 7 days, although none in the last 24 hours
Probably more than I'd expect at this time of the year, if I didn't get many around mid Feb to mid March then I'd be a bit concerned.
-
I haven’t had any new ones for several days, that happens sometimes, it’s nothing to worry about.
-
Thanks everyone. I looked on another forum and people are saying that Ancestry are currently not uploading the results for kits which finished analysing after the 21st December (like my father's).
Queenie :)
-
You should count yourselves lucky. I’m on FTDNA and My Heritage and am lucky to get one new match a month …. or longer. :)
-
I had quite a few Ancestry matches earlier in the week but none in the last couple of days.
My Heritage and 23andme are still finding matches.
-
At the moment I seem to get pages of new matches on My Heritage almost every day!
Most of them are quite low cMs levels though…
Romilly.
-
Hi there,
I'm on LivingDna,Ancestry& Myheritage and don't get any results on a regular basis.
I just assumed my matches may come eventually and live in hopes.
Sad thing is the two matches l do have a 1st to 2nd cousin doesn't reply and the other 2nd twice removed knows nothing of there family.
-
Thanks everyone for your replies.
There is definitely a problem at Ancestry. No one whose DNA finished analysing after the 20th December has received their results (as far as I know). No new matches for 8+ days now. My father's kit is still in limbo.
Queenie :)
-
Have you tried phoning them on the help number Queenie?
Romilly.
-
Hi Romilly,
Funnily enough, I just phoned them. They denied everything, of course ::)
I am a member of another forum and every single person is complaining of the same problem. I wonder if it is a computer system failure? I just wish they would be honest; it would save me refreshing every 5 seconds in anticipation.
Regardless, it's good to know it is not just my kit which has stalled, but it is so frustrating! It has been over a week now since it analysed. My mother's kit took just 24 hours after analysing to be uploaded.
I am dying to get the results so I can (hopefully) find my dad's lost cousin, who was adopted out of the family as a baby. S/he is most likely in Ireland or America, both of which have a large DNA database.
Queenie :)
-
There is something funny going on with Ancestry, because I’ve had no new matches whatsoever on there, and I usually get at least a few most days…
Perhaps they’re saving them all up as a New Year’s Eve surprise?
Romilly :D :D ;)
-
The Ancestry customer representative was attempting to convince me that I was losing my mind and everyone else was receiving results/the matches were coming through as normal. What frustrates me most is the complete lack of transparency. If there is a problem, I understand - just be honest.
Excuse my rant, I'm just disappointed. I don't hold out much hope that the results will be arriving any time soon.
Thanks again.
Queenie :)
-
I've had no new matches since the beginning of last week. I usually have dribs and drabs every day.
-
It's nice to know I'm not going mad!
Queenie :)
-
Perhaps we should all phone them to ask what’s going on?
Romilly.
-
Honestly, I wouldn't bother if I were you. I wish I hadn't. The representatives are unwavering in their position: there is nothing wrong. I don't blame them; they are doing their jobs and Ancestry has clearly told them not to let on that there is a problem with the system.
I am rather surprised that a large and international company like Ancestry is experiencing such significant technology issues, and for more than a week. They must have 1000s of tests waiting to be uploaded. The backlog, especially with the post-Christmas rush, is going to be insane. I can only imagine the panic behind the scenes!
Thanks,
Queenie :)
-
Definitely not just you. I've had no new matches for over a week, which is unusual. Maybe they'll upload them as a new year present :)
-
Fingers crossed! :)

I have trees for both me and my wife.
We both had our DNA tested just over 2 years ago.
On my wife's tree I get new matches fairly often and she has 859 matches. 44 are extended family with 5 close family.
On my trees I have 382 matches and I have not had any new ones for a good 3 weeks but that is par for the course for me. 44 are extended family with 3 close family
Of course I cant get matches if people with matching DNA tests have not done Ancestry DNA tests but I don't know if my matches are still a lot or for that fact my wifes.
I dont know if my matches not counting distant would be considered average for me and my wife.
Best wishes from Winnipeg where it is a balmy -41C today.
-
Still nothing new for me… :-[
I phoned the helpline yesterday evening and asked about it, but to be honest it was a waste of time! They said that holiday periods are often quiet, and so perhaps things will pick up again after New Year?
Romilly.
-
When I bought my dna test kit 3 years ago, I bought it in the Black Friday sale and the results were through on Boxing Day.
So I have been expecting some more matches to be appearing, however with everything else that is going on in the world, then I suppose results from the sales at Black Friday being a week or so later isn't beyond the realms of possibility.
If anyone bought and returned a sample from the Black Friday sale this year, perhaps they can say if/when they've had their results.

Romilly.
It is most certainly not a quiet period; there is a serious issue at Ancestry and they are unwilling to admit it.

(FYI: Reddit is a free social networking site, totally safe to view)
No kits which finished analysing on or after the 21st December (9 days ago now) have had results posted to the user accounts. There must be a backlog of 1000s of finished kits at this point, and it is only getting worse as time goes on. This is the cause of no-one receiving new matches.
If anyone bought and returned a sample from the Black Friday sale this year, perhaps they can say if/when they've had their results.
Lisa
I bought and returned a sample from the Black Friday sale, as did many others. We are all stuck in the post-21st December purgatory group. I will update if/when I receive mine.
Queenie :)
-
I haven't had any new Ancestry DNA matches either for about 10 days now. Thought it was just me. Sounds like a common problem though.
-
Nothing for ten days here either, but they've been coming through on MH and FTDNA ok.
-
Thanks everyone for your responses. Please do update the thread when you receive new matches, as that will be a sign that everything is returning to normal.
Queenie :)
-
With COVID/self isolation periods I imagine Ancestry are having difficulties at the lab? I imagine things will slowly get back to normal and you'll get your results in the new year. :)
-

Queenie :)
First one through for me at 17cM but no shared matches and only a tiny tree. Ah well, it's a start. Hope others start seeing some come through soon as well.

Hurrah! Finally there is movement! ;D Still haven't received any new ones on my mother's account, but hopefully soon.
-
Sharon's still the top of my list ::)
-
No change for me, or any of the DNA Accounts that I manage.
Romilly.
-
I've had none for weeks. I've never had lots but there's not even lower matches coming up. Its a bit unfair by Ancestry.
-
I gather from one of the DNA Groups on Facebook that Ancestry have turned off all notifications for the duration of the holiday period, and so possibly they’ll start coming through again overnight?
Romilly.
-
Lets hope they get their collective finger out and get things moving. Its not a free service we are paying!!
While I'm having a moan I wish they wold do a general clean up of 'empty accounts' where people have joined for free, put no tree on and are now populating the members list with a load of nothing!
-
I just looked, and I’ve got one new (low cMs, 12) DNA match!
And so the holiday break must be over!!
Romilly.
-
I bizzarely had 1 match come through today, but it said it was 2 weeks old!! I check everyday for unviewed matches, sorted by date. Now maybe I made some sort of mistake, but it is not that, as my Dad also had the same match showing today, when sorted for unviewed matches, in date order. I might have made a mistake once, but not twice, on different tests, with the same match! I assume this has been a match 'stuck in the system', when they seemed to stop releasing new matches in the week before christmas.
As I said, I check my matches on the 3 accounts i manage, every day, that way you keep up to date, and it doesnt take too much time!
Jane
-
Anyone else seen any activity of late? Nothing here after the solus match appearing on Friday :-[
-
Good news! I have now received my father's ethnicity estimate, so his DNA matches should be arriving in the next few days. Hopefully, this means that the results of everyone else's kits, which have been sitting in limbo, should be posted soon and we will all start receiving matches again.
Apparently, Ancestry decided to not upload any results between 23rd December and 3rd January, stating that their offices were closed for the festive season. For some strange reason, instead of just telling everyone what they were doing, they pretended that they were operating as normal.
To be honest, I am very unimpressed by Ancestry's customer service. If they had just told me that, I would not have been concerned and would have waited happily, knowing my results would arrive in early January. Instead, every time I called, they told me that only I was having this problem and everyone else was receiving matches as normal! It was only when I reached out on here that I found out that was untrue.
I will let you know when I receive the full results.
Queenie :)
-
some new matches appeared this morning. 7 on one account, 5 on the other. Had gone down to zero - never been there before.
Happy New Year! :)
and while I typed, some more arrived, only a few but things must be moving again.
-
I agree Queenie,
It does seem odd to not put something on the Site advising about the closedown, but perhaps they thought that people might start asking for refunds?
I only found out from posts on a Facebook Group.
Incidentally I’ve had about a dozen new DNA matches through this morning, but all under 20cMs.
I hope that your results come through soon.
Romilly.
-
:o
What fun - 4 new matches and one is 25cMs
:o
-
Same here, one of them 37cM already tagged with common ancestors - although they match two distinct clusters and so there's more than one connection there. Does anyone have the new layout that shows multiple options for common ancestors? They started trialling that ages ago but took if off my account after a few weeks and not seen it again :-\
-

I seem to have it still.
If I go to the trees tab I get the closest relationship for common ancestors, then
'view more possible connections' in green underneath
When I click that I get a popup
-
I have the same as Lizzie.

Thanks, Romilly. I just received my results this morning. No surprises thus far, but am looking forward to researching further!
Thanks also to everyone who contributed on this thread and confirmed that I wasn't going crazy! ;D

I know numbers aren't everything, but between thethe 3 tests I manage, I have >120 matches in since I checked yesterday about this time!! My cousin is maternal, my dad is obviously paternal, and I will share the majority of my ones (38), with one or the other. Mine are mostly 15cM and under, but there are a couple >20! First registration dates vary from midish Novenber to 1st week in December.
Nothing of great interest though among my Dad's, the only ones I have looked at closely so far! Umm..... I had promised myself I would clean the hall way this morning.......!

I've had no new matches for over a couple of months. I think that Ancestry has lost its market in the UK.
Gordon
-
Are you sure, Gordon, as they released again a week or so ago. I've only had a couple of 'close' matches though and most of them are 12cMs or less with no or limited trees.
-
I've had over 80 in the last 10 days or so. One was a low match 16cM and no shared matches, but had the same uncommon surname as my mother's maiden name.
She only has a small tree, just as far as her grandparents, but I was able to identify her as my 5th cousin. I extended my tree on Ancestry up to her paternal grandfather and within a few hours, Ancestry had picked up, correctly, that we had a common ancestor.
-
Absolutely zero.
Gordon
-
I've had a very encouraging 450 new matches over the past two weeks.
-
Absolutely zero.
Gordon
I'd say it's basically impossible to have zero new matches. There must be something wrong with your account or the way it syncs - you should contact Ancestry about this.
-
I've checked in New Matches and I've had 144 in the last 2 weeks. Only 2 above 20 cMs though.
Gordon are you checking in the correct place : Groups -> New Matches.
-
I've found that I have had a few around 8 or 9cm but nothing more substamtial.
Gordon
-
But that's not 'Absolute zero'* . If you read through the posts, you'll see that most of us are having matches below 20 cMs and mostly below 10cMs.
I had a 21cM match today but then the others are 12 and a few 10s and then some as low as yours are.
* your post #52
PS - it's best not to look too often :)

That's totally normal.

Hi Gadget
You mentioned a path "Groups > New Matches". I can't see that anywhere is Ancestry. Where can I find it?

Click on 'View All matches' on main DNA screen. Then Click on Groups and then New Matches
-
Ps
I usually go to' Unviewed' but to count how many you've received in the last fortnight, you click on 'New matches'
-
Click on "sort" then choose "date, newest to oldest"
-
Click on "sort" then choose "date, newest to oldest"
That's a very long winded way of looking for New Matches. The New Matches selection gives a listing in amount of cMs.
-
Thanks, that's what I usually do, but I thought that the "Groups" thingy was something different that I'd missed :)
-
Are people still getting matches through? After an absolute influx, I've not had any more for a week, when it's usually a couple a day in normal times. Just wonder if they're changing something as that also tends to hold back the matches.
-
It’s probably another Update due, - things usually get held up before one.
Romilly.

Same here. Maybe they are trying to sort out the complaints about the new look? :-)

Not just me, then. I wonder what exciting upgrade is on its way - chromosome browser, shared matches below 20cM, more dots for groups...? Or a change in font type and size.

I'm not getting my hopes up for anything too impressive. But I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
If we suddenly get a chromosome browser and shared matches under 20cM, I might just weep for joy.
-
I always thought Ancestry DNA matches came through in bulk on a Thursday?
Pheno
-
Or a change in font type and size.
Yup, that'll be the one ;D
-
Think I may have spotted a change of major importance. Before the new format came along in recent weeks, matches with a common ancestor were flagged with a solid green leaf. After the change, I had a leaf with a green outline but no solid fill. Now, however, it shows as a funny head and shoulders with two blobs either side, like two very big ears. Anyone spot the same?
-
After reading the last few pages of this thread I looked at the DNA tab on Ancestry and its new functionality (well new to me anyway).
I liked the way you can attribute the matches to your paternal or maternal side and mark them accordingly. Was a little surprised to see i have three times as many matches on my paternal side as on my maternal side but i guess that's just down to who tests. Overall an improvement i think.
-
I've had the paternal/maternal relationship distance facility for a good length of time - certainly sometime last autumn.
-
And 21 new matches have tumbled through this morning with the only change I can see to the symbols for common ancestor and type of tree they have (or don't have). Well, that was worth waiting for.
-
After nothing for more than a week I've 27 new ones come in this morning.
Tony.
-
Just as Pheno said :)
-
Just as Pheno said :)
Exactly as Pheno said but mine usually drip in 2 - 6 at a time on an almost daily basis.
I'm still quite new to DNA and can't resist a peep most days!
Tony.
-
I usually find that they pop up every afternoon (UK time). I have 22 more than yesterday, including 2 over 20cMs.
I've jsut looked in again and 10 more since this am - including one of 100 cMs :o
-
32 for me this afternoon!
-
32 as of 11am and now 64 total as of 5.45pm
-
I'm noyt sure what is going on. This morning there were 22 more. This afternoon there were 10 more and now there are a further 12. So 44 more today and it's still early ??? ::) :-X
-
This is a bit bonkers, they're coming through like tickertape, and one low match looks familiar, so could it be these aren't actually new matches but existing ones who had fallen off the list for some reason, or perhaps had their cMs reworked?
-

I'm not sure as I did a double select - Unviewed with (Groups) New Matches so it should not show any old ones - none were colour coded that I can see and I usually colour code those 9cM and over when they come up.
-
If they were removed altogether, they may lose the colour coding and also their place in the time order.
-
All my 64 (so far today) are all new although only 2 over 20cm
Clearing the backlog processing new users DNA. Christmas presents? Folk are stressed out waiting.

Well, the photo of this 'new' 9cM match has definitely come through before, and I've checked the other sites I use to make sure I'm not remembering it from there. I've also done a search on the name and it doesn't come up - as usual for the first 24 hours of a new match coming through (it doesn't seem to get indexed immediately) - and so it's not some kind of glitchy duplicate.
If Ancestry has removed a load of matches for some reason, even if by mistake, they're hardly likely to admit it, especially if notes and colour coding have been lost with them.
-
Random checked a few of today's matches joined dates, some are between christmas and new year 2021. The odd 2006, 2012. Bear in mind I opened my Ancestry account 5 years before buying a DNA test.
-
Another way of checking is to sort matches in descending date orer and filter according to whether you've messaged them. If any from today turn up, you'll know they've been in your list before.
EDIT Just done this myself and only matches from over three months ago turn up when I've contacted several more since then.
-
The messaged filter has always come back blank despite having messaged known matches.
Checked few more and a couple joined Christmas day. I think it's the awareness and promotion by TV ads and programmes selling kits. Plus Ancestry closed down for the Christmas period without notifying
-
This is getting dafter - another 20 added. ::)
-
68 for me so far :o

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=857370.msg7259823#msg7259823
On 6 Jan this year, I had 37189 matches. I now have 37330 or 141 more since then / and 64 today/ so it does look as if they've been playing.
Add - 22.25 it's slowing down now - only 2 since I first posted this ;D
-
This can't be just about the post-Xmas blip, it's not long enough for this many results to come through.
-
Phew - 56 new matches today (just for me, I have not checked the other 2 accounts I manage!), will have to work on therm tomorrow night, as I have been busy today, and just noticed them, and have a fairly busy day tomorrow too!!
-
Todays count is 80 thats 11/day since the matches updates stopped last week. Most joined between mid Nov 21 and early Jan 22. Maybe they ramped up? Big business now, 1921 census release, lots of reach on tv and social media.
-
Not just me, then. I wonder what exciting upgrade is on its way - chromosome browser, shared matches below 20cM, more dots for groups...? Or a change in font type and size.

If we suddenly get a chromosome browser and shared matches under 20cM, I might just weep for joy.
Just recently going through my 18-19cM again, now the unweighted amount is listed, I am getting a bit of a shock, and also annoyed, when I see how many 18-19cM would actually be up to 30cM+ unweighted, and so would show up on shared matched lists...fortunately some still show up as part of shared groups if you look at their shared matches, but that may not always be the case, if their matches to other people are also 'Timbered' and reduced.
If there is going to be an improvement, I would hope for a big increase in the number of coloured groups allowed, using checked or dotted patterns if necessary.
-
Melba - when I've looked at random unweighted cMs, it doesn't make a lot of difference when only one segment is shared e.g. 15cMs -> 17
< 1% shared DNA | 15 cM across 1 segments
Unweighted shared DNA: 17 cM
Longest segment: 17 cM
but is significant with multiple segments e.g. 15cMs -> 30
< 1% shared DNA | 15 cM across 3 segments
Unweighted shared DNA: 30 cM
Longest segment: 13 cM
~~~~~~~~
Another 50 since last night including 3 over 20cM which are definitely new.
-
40 new matches for me up to last night. Unfortunately, the largest was only 18 cm.
The worst one I've noticed is one of my matches...9cM where the unweighted amount is 25cM. What's going on there?!
-
How many shared segments?
-
My theory about shared segments doesn't fit :(
< 1% shared DNA | 15 cM across 1 segments
Unweighted shared DNA: 25 cM
Longest segment: 25 cM
The one I've got that really irks me is 10cM over 1 segment but 21cM unweighted. This match could help with a huge brick wall but being below 20cM weighted means I can't see any shared matches with them. And they're a 3C1R with MRCA in the 1800s, not a 7C going back a hundred years before that. >:(
How many shared segments?
Hi Gadget
I got my figure slightly wrong (I was on my phone earlier).
It is 9cM across 1 segment, unweighted shared DNA 32cM, longest segment 32cM!!!
-
It's that Timber algorithm and the assumptions it's based on!
Add - more about it here, if you've not seen how it's applied:
https://www.ancestry.com/corporate/blog/filtering-dna-matches-at-ancestrydna-with-timber/
-
Thanks for that Gadget, I hadn't seen it before. It's very interesting, I learned something new on Rootschat today. Thanks
-
Coming in thick and fast now, all below 15 cM, except one.
158 cM over 10 segments. unweighted also 158. Largest segment 29
The same person tested with FT-DNA a couple of years ago, and as you can't upload DNA data to Ancestry from a test done elsewhere, he must have done a new test.
On FT-DNA his match with me is
151 cM with longest segment 30 cM. Is that difference surprising? especially as Ancestry usually adjusts down a bit.
-
I was hoping for another bumper Thursday but no luck so far.
Maybe later on today a wave of new matches will reach me/us.
-
Had a flurry of new matches this past week, although the vast majority don't seem to be bothering to make trees so working out common ancestors might be quite difficult!
