While searching the name Stephen Tamkin, found the Census of both 1851 and 1841 has his address as Mockwood Alley. The originals are both in different handwriting. I know there is a Mockford Alley off the High Street. Can anyone please verify if that Alley had a name change at some time? There are possibly several other mistakes, in that what seems to be the same family are Tomkin in 1851 and Sarah aged 39 in 1841 is Sarah 59 with a ? in 1851. My main person of interest is Stephen Tamkin and and if there is any information about that family prior to his father John, or if there is anyone out there researching this family.
Cheers

Death notice in 1873 says "at Moxford Alley"
"July 28th, at Moxford Alley, Tenterden, Mr. Stephen Tamkin, aged 40 years, much respected by all who knew him."
Saturday, Aug. 2, 1873
Publication: Hastings and St. Leonards Observer

Also a death notice for John if you haven't seen it:
"May 6th, at Tenterden, Mr. John Tamkin, aged 78 years."

Marriage of John TAMKIN and Sarah FOWLER 7 May 1821 at Tenterden.
Possible baptism for John at Tenterden 22 Jan 1797, parents Thomas and Elizabeth.
Possible marriage of Thomas TAMKIN and Elizabeth HARRIS 9 Apr 1782 at Tenterden.
There is a will for a Thomas TAMKIN, yeoman of Tenterden around 1809 that mentions son Thomas and grandchildren Thomas, Fanny and Mary, though no John as far as I can read. Children to Thomas and Elizabeth baptised at Tenterden seem to be:
23 Feb 1783 Thomas
21 Mar 1790 Mary
25 Jan 1792 Nanny (is this Fanny?)
25 May 1794 Philly (Philadelphia bu 4 Mar 1814, aged 21)
22 Jan 1797 John
26 Oct 1800 Henry

Try Tenterden History Society. They are the most likely people to have this sort of knowledge.

Thank you all for your information. This gives me the best leads I have had about this family. Stephen Tamkin was my grandmothers father so important that I get the correct family. Shall contact the Tenterden History Society and I have just found a Tenterden site on Facebook which might be useful. Just wondering Maddys52 where the baptism records are available. Thank you all once again.

Ancestry has the baptism records indexed. Not sure about Findmypast.
They are also indexed on familysearch and FreeReg. :)

I checked the enumerator’s route on the 1851 census.
The old maps I looked at don’t name every alley but is hard to work out the location of Mockford (or was it Mockwood?) Alley. I think the writing on census is bad hence the name anomaly.
Some roads don’t seem to have been covered by the enumerator, whereas others were eg Bishops Lane is, but School Lane is not, and Church Lane is not marked on the map but is part of the enumerator’s route:

I think we need a more detailed map. :)

Try
https://webapps.kent.gov.uk/KCC.KLIS.Web.Sites.Public/ViewMap.aspx
It's the most detailed map that I have found - just zoom in. There are links to old maps too but they are less detailed.

Thank you all for your information. After looking at the maps and other documents, all the names allude to the same Alley which is now named Mockford Alley and is off the High Street. Tenterden have a facebook page and a photo showed a John Tamkin outside his fishmonger shop in the High street. My Grandmother mentioned her Grandfather smoking herring, so that fits her story. My line of thought at this stage is that the business was taken over by John junior as he was the oldest son. The search continues. Once again thank you bkr188
