my grandfather died a good sixteen plus years before I was born, early forties, and there's next to nothing about him in the family - odd photos, minimal info - gran is no longer about, my dad and his sister know as much as myself now. so, can anyone further advance the following, as I'm officially lost now....
George Mann
b. 1921 (Mar-Jun) Durham
m. 1946 (Jul-Sept) Durham, Marjorie Norman
d. 1961 (November) Durham
In regards Marjorie, her info is as follows -
b. 13/02/1921, Durham
m. as above
d. 27/02/1993, Durham
They had two children, born 1951 (Durham), 1956 (Oxford) -both alive, their birthday's this month....
Anything, anywhere, on George Mann, is what I'd love, more so now....
-
The next step is to look at the marriage certificate for George and Marjorie, to get fathers names.
-
There is no 1961 death in Durham for a George Mann
-
What was Georges exact date of birth?
Did George have a second name starting with T?
I can see 2 possible birth registrations in Co. Durham.

Do your dad & his sister know who their Mann grandparents were? I wonder was he born somewhere other than Durham
-
Although they married, I can;t see that Marjorie's name was updated on the 1939 Register to reflect that event
-
Can you see any possible GM's on the 1939 register with parents to check out.
-
Please don’t be offended but…
Do your father and aunt have real memories of his death? Or were they just told he had died?
Speaking of my own mother’s death in the 1960s, we went to school one morning, came home, she had been taken to hospital, she died in hospital. We didn’t ever see her in hospital, we were told she had died, and then we were whisked away. We didn’t go to the funeral.
In the early years my father didn’t like to talk too much about her.
Thinking about it, it would have been very easy for us to believe a tale.

Coming back to this, with new information (last year was a write off due to a bereavement, health issues, etc)....
So, George Mann (Marjorie I have information there) - I've finally seen certificates and records, not seen since the mid-nineties (in back of my aunt's wardrobe, bless her....
Born 09/09/1922 (place unknown)
Married 31/08/1946 (Durham)
Died 23/11/1962 (Ashford, Surrey) they lived in Ambrosden, Bicester, at least 1956-62
Military - RAOC #14311890, WWII
His father's name was James; so, looking for a place of birth, and anything to kick on further from there .....
-
If that is the correct birth date for George
MANN, GEORGE mmn APPLEBY
GRO Reference: 1922 D Quarter in CHESTER LE STREET Volume 10A Page 930
He appears in the 1939 war register with that dob and parents James & Jane.
Do/does the names Winifred, Doris, Thomas being possible siblings to George.
John
-
Dates are correct as per his service record, and the marriage and death certificate (we don't have birth), anything beyond that, couldn't say
His father's name was James (as per marriage cert), a bricklayer at time of George/Marjorie wedding in 1946
-
How about siblings, anything.
John
-
If she became a Bell, then Doris is possible
Death cert. for George has a D. Bell, sister, of Londonderry Avenue, Durham. as the informant....
(Just spoke to my dad and his sister and I know more than they do, oooops)...
-
For the back burner at present. Believe this to be George's parents. They married dq 1921 chester le Street.
their birth's
MANN, JAMES mmn LONGLEY
GRO Reference: 1900 S Quarter in CHESTER-LE-STREET Volume 10A Page 561
APPLEBY, ELSIE MAY mmn HODGSON
GRO Reference: 1900 J Quarter in CHESTER-LE-STREET Volume 10A Page 55
The 1921 census finds both parties living in Witton Gilbert, Chester le Street.
1939 war register finds George with dob 9.9.1922 with James dob 29.6.1900 and Jane H(Harriett) dob 29.6.1906.
James Mann married Jane H Williams jq 1932 Chester le Street.
WILLIAMS, JANE HARRIETT mmn BIRD
GRO Reference: 1906 D Quarter in KINGSTON Volume 02A Page 390
Jane Harriet Mann died with same dob 1984 Merton Surrey.
At some point I believe James and Elsie parted company between 1921-1939
John
-
Yes, I believe there's a divorce and a remarriage around that period
For Elsie, that name has continued in the family, as has George for that matter
-
Do not think I can offer any more help on this post. If pennies allow the birth cert of George would confirm his dob and James marriage to Jane Harriett in 1932 would confirm father. Believe James died 1955
Deaths Jun 1955
Mann James 54 Surrey N.E. 5g 513 (Covers Merton where Jane died in 1984)
John
-
More than enough help, currently fill in blanks through Ancestry - one piece fills the jigsaw so, if correct (dob is in his army record as such) then, fingers crossed....
-
If she became a Bell, then Doris is possible
Death cert. for George has a D. Bell, sister, of Londonderry Avenue, Durham. as the informant....
