Title: NSW research
Post by: lil growler on Thursday 16 December 21 00:05 GMT (UK)
Hi there

I have a small amount of Australian research knowledge. I have found a NSW bmd record for Jane Scott Bett who died 1983, listed as Jeane Scot Bett. The 1980 Australian electoral roll has Jane residing at Masonic Towers, Lowe Road, Hornsby. I have looked online for historical probates and found nothing under her name and also cemeteries in Hornsby but they don't appear searchable. I know I can purchase her death certificate but would like to find more details first, if possible. What can you suggest?

Regards

Lil

Have you tried ryerson index - the online index by volunteers for many newspapers death/funeral announcements?

The NSW BDM online search option allows for determining the date of the event - similar concept to the NZ BDM online option.

So it drills down to 10 December 1983.   The Hornsby paper would be Hornsby Advocate.  Its currently part of the Murdoch group, but it used to be a stand alone paper.  I don't do facebook, but Mr google says the Hornsby Advocate has a facebook page.

NSW Probates ... not every deceased estate required/s applying for a grant of probate.  And, even with a grant, it can be a difficult search to find who holds the proven Will.

Cemetery/Crematorium ...  Try https://nmclm.com.au/locations/macquarie-park/

Did she have any relatives in Australia?  Looks from the ERs that she did not have anyone of the same surname living with her so perhaps not.  Just a thought that sometimes a person is buried along with relatives.

Hi Judith

I have suspected for sometime J S Bett on the Australian Electoral rolls is my gal. She lived in NZ with her sister and a niece, then disappeared from NZ. This week on findmypast I found travel/immigration records between the two countries which is confirmation enough she is mine. Then i looked for a registered death and almost missed it because she is label as Jeane Scot. To answer you question, as far as I know she wasn't with any family. Jane never married. I do have a vague memory of a Bett family member being in Australia though, I just can't recall who or where they settled

No 1983 record for BETT Jane/Jeane in Ryerson.
There is a group of indexers working on the Hornsby paper but I'm not sure what stage they are at, or even whether they are working as far back as 1983.
