Title: Mahala Jane Titus
Post by: valeriet on Tuesday 14 December 21 02:15 GMT (UK)
Mahala Jane Titus (nee Priest) was my 2nd great grandmother born around 1820 in New Brunswick, married to Daniel Titus. I havent been able to find any marriage records for them or any details of Mahala Jane's parents. I've seen other trees online that suggest her parents were called William and Sarah but with no proof or reason attached so I don't know if its accurate or not. Usually she is just called Jane and sometimes Mahala or even Mahalia.

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate that.

Thanks Sandra, Rebecca Maria Titus was the first child of Daniel and Jane. Nice link though as there's a photo of Rebecca :)

I've seen a wedding date for them in 2 or 3 places but with no documentary proof and with contradictory information in each. It's puzzling me. I've also seen the names William and Sarah mentioned but also without any evidence. I'm not sure if it's accurate or one persons guesswork which is being copied and repeated....one of the challenges of family history I guess.

A suggested date for the marriage between Daniel and Jane is 2nd January 1841 - Sheffield Sunbury County by Raper Milner. Elsewhere it says they married in Georgia. I've tried finding the actually wedding record but havent found it on any official source. I'm wondering if the method I'm using to search is wrong or if a different name was used or something.

I appreciate both of your help. Hopefully it might lead to me discovering more :)

"married by licence with consent of friends" - I've never seen that before. I wonder what it tells you/us?  Maybe someone more familiar with New Brunswick or British records would know. Does it mean their parents had died? Wouldn't consent usually come from the parents?  -

Searching the exact phrase found a few other instances, all in UK, Canada, or Australia, including another in New Brunswick in 1830:

The question has been asked before, but not answered:

Both would have been of an age to marry without any consent surely.  Sure I read some where that it was quite a young age 15/16 ish ?

According to ancestry tree Daniel's father Benjamin (John) Titus died 1842 - Jemseg, Queens, New Brunswick ? (No source)

Thanks. I thought it might help find their parents, but maybe not.

I looked in that marriage database for the surname Priest, from 1789 to 1841 and only found this one other one, besides Mahala J Priest:

Married
20 June 1820, Sunbury County
John Barry Priest of Maugerville Parish
Rebecca Redmore of Maugerville Parish
by consent of themselves
by R Milner
witnesses: John Combs? and Mary Lewitt
https://archives.gnb.ca/Search/CountyCouncilMarriageRecords/Details.aspx?culture=en-CA&Key=02640e1b-3428-49e9-8790-fd7b962d8743

this might be him later. It's hard to tell.

1851 Census Fredericton
John Priest, 70, born in Scotland, inmate of alms house, religion: Church of England

I didn't find anything else on this couple, so there is no way of knowing if they are related to Mahala Jane Priest.

I found these two sources, in case you haven't seen  them yet:

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/New_Brunswick_Census
I don't think your area is covered in the censuses they list, but I didn't look closely

https://sites.rootsweb.com/~cannb/
I only took a quick look at this site.

Thanks for that.. Maugerville parish is where Daniel and Mahala Jane married so it's very possible.
