Post by: clanlyles on Friday 02 September 05 03:59 BST (UK)
Does anyone have information on the Watson family of Marske?  Here is what I have (but I wish for more):

William Snaith Watson (born 1917 in USA) son of:
William Snaith Watson (born 1882 in Marske, Yorkshire) son of:
Horatio Watson (born 1856 in Durham, Hartlepool, Yorkshire) son of:
Michael Watson (born 1816 in Brotton, Yorkshire) son of:
Thomas Watson (born ?, where ?) any information on this man and back would be greatly appreciated.  Also any help on how to decipher the township names in England would be helpful for this southern american boy.

Hi Clanlyles

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.  I am doing a bit of housekeeping work on this board and wondered if you have made any progress, or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Ticker

Hello Clanlyles

I have had a look round for Thomas on the 1841 Census which is not fully indexed yet, I have not found him.

19th Feb 1823 burial Thomas Watson age 36 at Brotton St Margaret may be him.

1823 Baines Trade Directory has Thomas Watson  in the Tailor section. I have only seen the index.

The area you are researching is covered by Cleveland Family History Society, there website is worth a browse to see what they publish, the Genuki Web has the address. What you need are Parish Records.
England is divided into Counties, Yorkshire is divided into North East and West Ridings. You are researching near the Yorkshire  border with Durham, if in the past the border has moved a town may be indexed with two counties. A modern map of England still has the places you are looking at.

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/Brotton/index.html

Below is a site to search the Trade Directories

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/HistDir/HTML/counties.htm

Good luck with the research sorry not to have given more direct help.

Regards Oly

Don't rule it out just because marriage cert doesn't state father deceased. I have a few where the father was deceased but  isn't shown as such on the cert, maybe the question wasn't asked.

I have only recently come back to this site so hope this information is still relative.

Michael's father was Thomas Watson baptised Grindon, Durham 1788 son of John and Mary Watson,
they had 2 other sons  William 1786 and Ralph 1790.
Thomas was a tailor and married Mary Pattison in Skelton, Yorkshire (Skelton is not far from Brotton) in 1815.
Michael was baptised in St Margaret's church Brotton (by coincidence my son was also baptised in the same church over 160 years later)  Michael is my 4 times great grandfather.
I have been trying for years to find information on Thomas's parents John and Mary but not had any positive information as Watson is a very common name.

Good look with your search
