I get the impression that he was lodging out in the open air and may have been bagging game.  Could well have been a poacher perhaps?

Today's equivalent is most likely to be 'of no fixed abode.'

‘gaming’ could mean gambling, I had a young lad arrested and fined for a gaming offence, playing cards for money on the street.
