Hi there
I am interested in some death/ funeral notices for people I am tracing in the Sunderland area. I have death details and was hoping I could find newspapers online to research. The period would be from the 1990 to present day. Can someone please advise how best to proceed

I do dislike seeing an unanswered post :-) but it looks like its not just me who is unable to find an online newspaper resource for this recent (in family history terms) a period.
If you are trying find where they were buried or if they were cremated this page shows the cemeteries within Sunderland
https://www.sunderland.gov.uk/article/18211/Cemeteries
and this link on the Durham Resources Board shows what cemetery register images for Co Durham are available on Family Search (I think the latest dates would be c1998). Not searchable but you can browse though
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=800454.0
and again on the Durham Resources Board, links to online Books of Remembrance, including a link to the Sunderland one

Link to indexes of Monumental Inscriptions (index only but it says you can email for further details if you see one of interest)

The local history library in Sunderland has The Sunderland Echo from 1873 to date and also, I believe, have the cemetery registers.

If you have a date of death then IF there was a notice it would likely be within a week or so of that, so they may look for you (not sure if there is a charge for remote queries) as you appear to be from outside the area and are unlikely to be able to pop in. There's an email address on the site. I'd suggest you ask about one to test it out - they are unlikely to have time to check for a long list in one go.

Have you tried the British Newspaper Archive, you can usually get three free pages when you register.

Sadly the coverage on BNA for Sunderland newspapers currently only goes up to 1959, so nothing yet for the requested time frame.

Have you tried contacting the Sunderland Echo, they may have had a death notice ?

Thank you so much for your response and for the resources ands suggestions. I'm unfamiliar with English research besides the use of Ancestry, so I shall delve into some research today and hopefully have some success.

There are a couple of websites (below) that publish UK obituaries gleaned from newspapers.

I will be going to the Sunderland Local History Library on Monday. If you can send me a personal message with the details of who you are searching for I will take a look and see what I can find.
If you can provide the date of the deaths it would be a good help, if you only have the quarter and year it will take a little longer as the Echo's are not indexed.

Thank you so much Ryhopelad.
I will message you later today with what details I have. I do have death dates. I am fairly certain I have the death dates.
