Title: A Long Shot! My ancestors in Irish Censuses

I've been chasing my ancestors around the British Isles and it just occurred to me that I hadn't looked (nor had any idea how to) in Ireland.  The particular branch I'm looking for were born around Dundee in Scotland and worked in the textile industry and since I can't find them in Scotland, England or Wales after 1865, I thought there could be a possibility that they followed the textile industry across the Irish sea.  The people I'm looking for in any Irish census from 1871 to 1901 are:

Alexander Crighton, born Angus, Scotland 1823 - Profession: Power Loom Manager on his daughter's birth certificate from 1865.
Matilda Crighton (nee Jackson) born Angus, 1832/1833 - His wife

and their children:

James Jackson Crighton, born Dundee, 1862
Isabella Sinclair Crighton, born Dundee, 1863
Matlida Crighton, born Dundee, 1865

Any information on them from the Irish censuses would be gratefully received - even a "No they're not there" or indeed any information on where I might continue the search.

Al, when I visited Ireland recently I was told that the censuses - they only have 1901 and 1911 since most earlier ones were lost in a fire, are held in the National Archives in Bishop Street.  Unfortunately I believe you need the location to look for as I think they are all on film, not transcribed into a database.

I only know it's not very easy to research prior to 1864 for BMD's either (or 1845 for for C of I entries) but here is some information http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm
Seems that for most research you need to at least know where they lived.

I think this is going to be somewhat of a challenge!  I think my best bet for narrowing down the search is going to be finding about where the textile industry was concentrated (I have a feeling that it was mainly in what is now Northern Ireland) and see what records I can find in these areas.

My other thought is trying to find anyting in the birth records.  The youngest child I know about is Matilda born 1865 in Scotland.  Her mother was only about 32 at the time so there could be younger children born in Ireland (If my wild guess is right!).

County Down was heavily involved in textile business. Ros Davies's site has listings of Crighton or Creighton.  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/SURNAMES/CraCri.htm

Caora has listings of head-of-households for 1901 Census in Down and there are listings of Creighton.   Here is link. http://www.caora.net/find.php

Those links look very interesting and just the kind of thing I was looking for.  Since I posted yesterday I've found out that my ggg Grandfather, James Jackson was born in Ireland!  Maybe this is not such a long shot after all?

I've just joined the forum so I don't know how old your message is.  The Irish 1901 and 1911 census are availabe free online.  The website is:  www.census.nationalarchives.ie/     When you're on the site just click on the search button.  You can search by name or address.

Welcome to Rootschat, sinclairdub. You can see the date of all postings- this thread started in 2005 but alcrighton who started it has been online today. The 1901 and 1911 census can both be searched by a variety of options- first name, last name, townland, age, religion, occupation, etc.or any combination of these.

Hi Sinclairclub and welcome to Rootschat. 

Since I first posted on this subject in 2005, I have found out that my missing relatives were actually in France rather than Ireland!  I'm sure the link will be useful to other Rootschatters with ancestors from the Emerald Isle.
