Hi I am trying to work out which John Russell is the father or my Gr Gr Gr Grandfather Thomas Russell
Thomas was born in the Ogley Hay area of Brownhills in 1827 and he moved to Bilston with his wife Frances. I only know that his fathers name is John and he was a nailor. This is from the Freereg document relating to their marriage at St Edithas church in Tamworth In 1845.
All other Johns that I find are living around the Shenstone area ( which isnt far from Brownhills) but are bricklayers that have Thomas for son
I have found a John that is a nailor in 1841 but the Thomas at that address is 30 years old. My Thomas would only have been about 14
I have Thomas on all other Census returns but the one that could give me Mother and Father information is eluding me. Anyone offer any advice??
Many thanks

the Thomas in this census

is a separate household, he could be a brother.
1851 shows Harriet as born Brownhills

1841 Cats Hill Shenstone
Thomas Poxton, 60, miner (very faint), bic
Hannah Poxton, 55, bic
Thomas Russel, 15, mason, bic
1851 census posted by osprey has William Russell, b1841 Walsall, matching GRO record has MMN as Poxton
Harriet Foxon a likely badly transcribed entry for Harriet Poxton, so Thomas is with his grandparents.

Thankyou for the information but I dont think that this is my guy, :'( purely based on occupation? In later census returns, Thomas is always listed as an Engine fitter/ turner
I guess its possible he moved jobs but my gut feeling is I dont think so??

Have you established who the witnesses William Allen and Louisa Allen were in case they are related.

I havent Rosie. I have had a look for them briefly but you are quite right, they could offer a link somewhere for me, thankyou for that suggestion ;)

ladies after much searching I do now believe that you are correct with this. My Thomas was an engine fitter but thats not to say that he hasnt changed trades at some point? It seems the only records that fit the information that I have, Thomas also names his first Born John then Hannah which was his wifes mothers name then the next born is Harriet so the names fit the family too.
The location, dates and occupation fit too with census returns. I dont think I am "making" it fit, it just all seems to at the moment.
thanks very much for the help

I have now found a baptism for a Thomas but it is in the 1850s so I now think that I do have the wrong Thomas. This is incredibly frustrating, back to the drawing board it is !

I have discovered that Joseph Russell was a witness at the Wedding of Thomas and Hannah. I am now trying to work out their connection. I do now think that I have the right people. I cant find any other nailor in Shelfield with the name John, I still cant find a birth for Thomas but it makes sense that if Harriet married John and her maiden name was Poxon then its likely their son that is staying with Grandparents.
