So this is kind of what I know so far....
I know my Great Grandfather was Christopher Vanstone from the Devon area(not sure of his birth year.)
I know Christopher's first wife died leaving him with several children.
Then he married Mary Ann Martin and had 3 more kids. Samuel Vanstone b.1886(my Grandfather[/i][/i]), Albert Vanstone b.1891 and Will Vanstone were their children.
Samuel and Albert migrated to Canada around 1916
Like his father, Samuel's first wife died after their son Albert was born in Brandon, MB.
Samuel remarried to Ellen Pugsley, originally also from Devon, but had emigrated with her parents to Brandon. They moved to Winnipeg an had Emily (married to A.Kemp), Muriel (married to L.Knight), Verna (married to R.Evans), Stanley (deceased at 6 months), Samuel (Marty) Vanstone, and Robert Vanstone (my dad) b.1930's.
My farther Robert married Joan and had 3 kids.
I currently live in Calgary Canada.

In the 1891census, Samuel Vanstone age 4 was born in St David, Exeter, Devon. His parents were Christopher, age 40, and Mary A Vanstone, age 28. Christopher Vanstone was born in Sandford Courtney, Devon, in about 1851.
In the 1861 census, there's a Christopher Vanstone, born in Sampford Courteney, Devon, in about 1847, the son of John Vanstone and Jane Vanstone.
John Vanstone was born in Sampford Courteney in about 1801.
The same information is given in the 1851 census.

Looking like Samuel and brother Albert likely arrived in Canada slightly earlier than c. 1916.
Possible shipping manifest entries for arrivals in Canada for Samuel in 1910 and Albert in 1911. Samuel Jnr's middle name Martin?

In Wikitree they have Christopher Vanstone born 1847 and his father John Vanstone born 1803, both in Sampford Courteney. This line goes back to 1605 - but some of those entries don't have much in the way of sources.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Vanstone-198
Tristram Vanston, age 65, and Grace Vanston, age 60, are in Sampford Courteney in the 1841 census.
These are the parents of John in the Wikitree line above.

Lorne, do you have access/subs to Ancestry? There is a relatively well documented tree (lots of photos) that may help www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/47998790/person/140040347606/facts

The old Vanstoneweb site seems to have been hacked >:(
I still get spam emails linked to Adidas, Nike, Etc!
Latest emails, purporting to come from the site, actually come from virtualforums?!
If you are on Ancestry, look for my tree "Garrad & Sims family tree" and look for my great-grandmother Ada Jane Vanstone (1862-1945)

The earliest Vanstone I've found is from 1535, but I don't know if or how he is connected.
In a case in Common Pleas, Hilary term 1535:
Devon. Richard Blynsham, clerk, versus John Vanstone, of Martyn, yeoman or butcher, for a debt of 10 marks.
Second to last entry:

I'm not sure where "Martyn" is. Martinhoe, Martinstowe, Combe Martin?
