Title: Daniel Bucknell & Sarah Hemmings of Essex marry 1823 St Lawrence, Kent
Post by: boxoffrogs on Tuesday 26 October 21 21:52 BST (UK)
Help!
I am trying to find out what town and any further information about these Essex retrobates!!
Daniel Bucknell (of Essex) and Sarah Hemming (of Chelmsford) married on 23 Dec 1823 St Lawrence, Kent.
Both then 'returned' to have children in Braintree, Essex, some were baptised in Braintree, Essex before the family seemed to have moved en masse to London. The clan definitely expanded but Daniel snr died c1845. I have found him in Braintree as a grocer on 1841C. I am trying to find any hints about his parents - I don't feel it's as simple as some 'A' trees make out. I have Bucknell ancestors around Kelvedon, but do feel he has to link in somewhere, if possible illegitimate.
Thanks Box!

St Lawrence is in Ramsgate, not an obvious choice of town to move to.

Do you know who the witnesses, William & Sarah Palmer were?

Thank you so much for replying and finding out that information. I can only assume that Sarah was maybe in service in Ramsgate, sadly all that I know is that Daniel was from  Essex (assuming that census data is correct ???), I believe he dies c1845 so is only on the one census.
No idea on the Palmers either,  ???more questions indeed! Could you tell whether it was banns or license?

They married by banns and were both of 'this parish'.

Thank you again, you know you always hope for a glimmer of something, back to the drawing board!
If you need a search on an Essex record, do ask!

Was Daniel the son of Robert (an excise officer) and Sarah baptised 2nd March 1806 at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney?

added none of the children on the 1841 census was called Robert.

No, I saw that as well, there seems to be another family in London too with similar names, but they're around Stepney and Mile End.
Daniel and Sarah had a son Daniel b1831 who married twice in London, a mixture of painter decorators, plumbers, around Paddington. They're not showing up on Census very well, but I do have Sarah on 1861 with her son Charles (Hemings) Bucknell 20yr and grandson Daniel 2yr.
Chn of Daniel/Sarah that I believe survived are Sarah Lucy, Daniel, Broughton, Charles, and three, John, James and Stephen currently unaccounted for.

I've been struggling to find them in 1851.  Where would you expect them to be?

Me too! I would expect them to be in London, purely because I'm assuming Daniel snr dies c1845 Kents Place, Paddington (I found this address on an interesting late baptism of daughter Sarah Lucy in 1844). I had hoped Charles would show up with his mother as sometimes that's an easier name to spot, but he doesn't. I have Daniel jnr in 1841, 1871, 1881.

You absolute star!!!!! Thank you!!!
On a 1911C I  Shepherds Bush, I'd found Mary Ann Hart w/o Daniel jnr with a whole raft of family including a Winifrid Ada Bucknell c1892 Brighton and I've spent a fair bit of the morning trying to work her out if she was another relative, the census states sister in law.

Well found John. You can't blame them for that transcription, the writing is dreadful.

I'd hoped Broughton would be easy to spot but he's listed as Bright. They don't make it easy.

You're absolutely right, I've added a note on Ancestry, then searching other viable found a Bucknell that was an incorrectly transcribed Cracknell!!
At least it proves that the siblings were around!
