Post by: Shand-Aberdeenshire on Wednesday 06 October 21 07:43 BST (UK)
Hello Everyone,
Need some help with my Shand Family. I have Joseph Shand b1790 traced to Rathen, Aberdeenshire. His father William Shand b1750 Methlick, Aberdeenshire d1823 Rathen, Aberdeenshire. William's father John Shand b1713 and Grandfather James Shand b1685 were from Methlick. That's as far as I can get.

I just got my results from FamilyTreeDNA. I have one Shand match. 111 markers at 3 steps. The next closest are below. Any help on this would much appreciated.

Construct a tree including sibling marriages (your gret/grand etc aunts and uncles and see where your tree and the tr4ee of those names intercept.

You need to have at LEAST an idea of which generation relative to yourself these "matches" lie

I’m not sure what you mean by “steps”, but presumably you are referring to the results of a Y-DNA test?

Does “steps” = generations?

Have you contacted all these matches to see if they are interested in working with you to find out your common ancestor/s?

Are there any Shand surname projects you can join?

This might offer some reasons for the different surnames:

The earliest birth you have is for James in 1685. The earliest records of births for Methlick are in 1670, so if earlier generations came from Methlick you’ve probably got as far back as you can.

It will be the same for the people on your list above.
