Hi Everyone,
I would be grateful for a look up in 1851 Derbyshire Census for a family , who were living in Stoney Middleton in 1853 when 2nd daughter Roseanna (Rosina) was born.
Their details are :
Thomas Hamson b 1816 Bolton? Lancashire - later census occupation, silk weaver.
Ann Hamson ( wife) b 1814 Nantwich, Cheshire
Emma Hamson daug b 1850 Derbyshire
I have been unable to progress any further back with this family than the 1861 census, when they were living in Spout Street, Leek, Staffordshire. The name is difficult, and may be transcribed as Hampson or similar.
I cannot find them in 1851 Census of Macclesfield, Cheshire ( maybe it has not yet been transcribed) Their son Thomas was b 1847 in Macclesfield. I cannot find them in the 1851 Leek Census. Thomas junior was still in Leek in 1871 with wife Ellen and family.
Thomas junior’s son, also Thomas, was born in Leek in 1874 and subsequently ended up in Collyhurst, Manchester, Lancashire where he married my grandmother.
So from Lancashire to Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and back to Lancashire I am stumped after many years of searching. ???

Thomas and Ann appear to have had a previous daughter named Emma;-
Emma Hampson, daughter of Thomas, a silk weaver, and Ann (MMN Miller) baptised on 9th February 1849 at Loughborough, All Saints. Abode: Sparrow Hill.
Her death was registered in Derby in 1849.

Hi Tony, David and Kay,
Thank you for your help in looking up the Hamson family. I have been trying to sort out all the possibilities that the family maybe transcribed as ‘Harrison’ as discovered by Tony.
The issue I have with this family is that they all seem to have been born in Stafford, except Emma which is correct as Derby. I know that young Thomas was born in Macclesfield (see Leek census1861-1891) The age of Thomas senior seems a bit off at 25 yrs old, when daughter Sarah is 12 ? Unless she was from a former marriage if Ann’s. I did not know that Ann’s maiden name was Miller, so that is something new. But this could be her first marriage name. She is recorded as being born in Nantwich, Cheshire.
I have found other possible children for the couple in Leek. Eli b 1855, Jane b 1857, Frances b 1859, and Mary Jane b 1862. Eli, Frances and Jane all died in 1859!
I still have a lot of unanswered questions, and I am finding it too tricky to sort out at the moment 🤔
Thanks a lot everyone for your efforts.

Hi Chris-1
You say “ who were living in Stoney Middleton in 1853 when 2nd daughter Roseanna (Rosina) was born”
Appreciate that the 1861 Census Leek, Staffs indicates that Rosina was born Derbyshire, Middleton,
however her birth was registered Oldham March q 8d 545. The mother Miller, which appears strange if actually born Derbyshire.
Middleton Derbyshire, if born there, could be Stoney Middleton or Middleton by Wirksworth.
There is a Middleton in the Oldham Registration District, so likely that in the 1861 census the enumerator just dittoed Derbyshire from the entry of Emma, which appears above.

Lancashire BMD has the birth registered as Harrison.

Hi Haywood,
Image of this birth registration per BMD, shows Hamson as does the Record on GRO site, so cannot explain why Lancashire has Harrison.

I am just pointing that out for anyone who might want to check - Chadderton sub district.

Hi,
Thanks
in 1871 Census, Rosina and Wm Heapy, are living next door to her mother and sister Mary Jane.
Rosina states age as 18, which is correct, a few months earlier on her marriage she stated 20, her place of birth she gives Leek, Staffordshire.
Which just proves you have to be careful when searching info for our tiresome ancestors

Hi Spendlove,
Thank you for looking into the Hamson family for me.
I had found Mary Jane's birth, but not discovered Ann on 1871 census of Leek. Is there an address for them?
The 1861 Leek census states Ann was b in Nantwich, Cheshire. But it was transcribed as Preston, Lancs in the 1871 census which you found.
Also, in 1861 the spelling of Thomas senior's birthplace as Boulton, Lancashire not Bolton could also be an error. Is there a possibility it could be Boulton, Derby?
Rosina 'Harrison's place of birth on the BMD.org is interesting as I know Middleton near Oldham very well. My assumption that it was Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire could well be incorrect. Thank you for pointing out other possibilities.
I have had no luck in finding the marriage of Thomas and Ann, they seemed to move Districts a lot. Their son Thomas was born in Macclesfield so maybe that is a possibility, who knows!
Many thanks again for your help.

In 1871 Ann and Mary Jane are at St Edward Street Court House, Leek & Lowe, Leek, Staffordshire.
In 1881, they are at 35, Bank Street, Macclesfield, Cheshire, with a grandson Leonard. Transcribed as Hanson.
Ann Hanson Head Widow Female 64 1817 - Leek, Staffordshire
Mary Jane Hanson Daughter Single Female 19 1862 Silk piecer Leek, Staffordshire
Leonard Hanson Grand son Single Male 0 1881 - Macclesfield, Cheshire
Mary E Sales Boarder Single Female 19 1862 Silk piecer Leek, Staffordshire
In 1901, he is with Robert and Jane at 206, Hamilton Street, Manchester, as a boarder
In 1911, he is in Manchester with Mary Jane Ball.
Mary Jane Hamson married Robert Ball in Leek on 1st August 1885, daughter of Thomas Hamson, a silk weaver.
In 1891, as Amson, he is with Robert and Jane as a stepson at Union Street, Leek and Lowe, Leek.

I think Ann Hamson's death was registered in Leek Q1 1890, born 1816.
Leonard, no mother's mmn, born Q1 1881 in Leek. Assume Mary Jane was His mother.

Hi Chris-1
In your last post you say
“
The 1861 Leek census states Ann was b in Nantwich, Cheshire. But it was transcribed as Preston, Lancs in the 1871 census which you found.”
In the 1871 census, looking at the place of birth stated on census image, Ann states born Preston so not a transcript as such.
In 1881 she states, again from census image, born Leek, Staffordshire.
In 1851 she states St. Mary’s, Stafford
She is not consistent when giving her place of birth, so of little help in finding her actual birth place.
Agree with DCB, that her death is March Q 1890 Leek
Leonard is with Mother in 1911 census Manchester, however he states Married 2 years, which ties in with a marriage June Q 1908 Leek. So Leonard Hamson married one of these Rose Benson or Ida Mary Chappells.

He married Rose Benson
-
Just found the same about Leonard from a tree on Ancestry:-
On the GRO birth index he is Howson, mmn Barker.
Born on 23 Dec 1880 in Leek, he married Rose Benson, nee Barker, in Leek Q2 1908.
She was born on 5th September 1869 in Leek.
Rose was living separately in 1911 with Clifford at 6 Angle St Leek.
Clifford married Lily Peacock in Leek district Q2 1941
They had a son John in 1947 but he died in the same year.
Also a daughter, who may still be living and had three children.

Hi Spendlove, DCB, Glenclare and heywood,
I appreciate your help with the Hamson's.
I have discovered some new things about the family. My interest is mainly with the 3 generations of Thomas Hamsons ending with my G Grandfather born about 1874 in Leek. He married Josephine Revitt and they were living in Collyhurst, Manchester in 1901.
DCB found Robert and Jane Ball in Manchester at the same time, I looked up Hamilton Street on an old map and it was just around the corner from where my G Grandparents were married on Whitley Street. Also, my G Grandfather's brother Henry 'Harry' Hamson was living at 138 Hamilton Street.
They obviously moved to Manchester for work, and it is surprising to find them living so close to each other.
Rosina's possible birthplace as Middleton in 1853, is interesting as it is only a few miles away from Collyhurst. ::)
Chris :)
