Searching for the arrival date in Victoria, Australia of David and Elizabeth Smith and children David, James Stewart, Margaret Watson and Thomas. Believe they arrived between 1852 and 1855.
David born in Lanarkshire in 1822 and Elizabeth in Lanarkshire in 1828.
David died in Creswick, Victoria in 1868 and Elizabeth in Brunswick, Victoriia n 1911.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this is any help. There is a record of a David Smith born 1822 travelling from Sydney to Melbourne arriving 30 January 1854.
The source is Victoria Coastal Passenger Lists 1852-1924
The record set is Australia, Inward, Outward & Coastal Passenger Lists 1826-1972
The image does not show him travelling with anyone else but I don't know if these records only showed the head of the family and they didn't bother to list the family members.
I'm not familiar with Australian family history. Perhaps someone else may be able to give you more suggestions as to where to look.

Very much appreciated your response to my query. I also found this and numerous other David Smith's but unable to find wife and children.
Stay safe.

Again very much appreciated receiving your comments. According to the records I have found on line son David was born in 1845 or 1847, Margaret was born in 1851 and a son Thomas in 1853 all born in Scotland. Five other children were born in Victoria, Australia.
I realize dates can be incorrect and I do wish your information was correct but I doubt it.
Again, thank you and stay safe.

Hi,
Have you considered asking the volunteer Moderator to move your thread over to the main Australia board?
Do you have the historic image of the 1868 death registration? What is recorded on it? Does it give you an answer to the question "how long in the colonies?"

From a newspaper cutting, a tragic event.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/112880931 3 November 1868 Ballarat Star
David Smith, a bushman, aged 45 years, and a married man, in the employ of Messrs Anderson Brothers, Dean, was admitted into the Creswick District Hospital on the night of 31st October, suffering from paralysis of the lower half of his body by reason of severe injuries to the spine and body, caused by the falling on him from a height of about 20 feet of a large branch while engaged in felling a tree. The poor fellow is in an almost hopeless condition.

You will find this family in Shotts, Lanarkshire in 1851. Father's name is incorrectly transcribed as 'Daniel' if you are using Ancestry. The Daniel/David confusion is not uncommon as they look very similar when written.

Vic BDM online deaths INDEX

SMITH David
mother's given name: Margaret
father's given name: David

Aged : 47 years
Registration number : 8474/1868
What to expect on Vic BDM registrations : https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,373754.0.html
It is possible that the hospital undertook the registration responsibilities, but perhaps they sought the family details from Elizabeth or from the older children.
The headings on Vic Death BDM records include

name and surname;
occupation of the deceased;
sex and age;
cause of death,
duration of illness,

JM
Sixteen years in the colony and Thomas' age is given as 15. I think it is most likely that Thomas was born either onboard or soon after arrival, prior to civil registration.
I also think that Elizabeth's mother Margaret may have remarried to John STEWART in 1831 which would explain the use of both the BROWN and STEWART names by Elizabeth.

:D
I found an image of the death registration for Elizabeth in 1911 in Victoria,
She was recorded as born Glasgow and 59 years in the colony (of Victoria). She died 22 March 1911. The informant was the Undertaker, and the cert is quite detailed.
1911- 59 = arrival 1852ish.

Thomas SMITH is buried at Fawkner Memorial Park with his mother Elizabeth James SMITH.
He died at Errol Street East Brunswick Victoria in 1929 and the informant stated his age to be 76 years.
He had shared the address with his mother at her death in 1911.
His mother left a will which favoured him and three of his siblings.
