I found my ancestors marriage in 1840 on Scotlandspeople which is great. The reference is (Old Parish Registers Marriages 646/ 30 226 Govan)
But which actual church in the parish did the wedding take place? How can I go about finding out?
thank you

Hi Carole
Thanks for reply.
I have spent the money and viewed this image. So my question is still the same.
It does not say which church it is. So how do I find out.

I would contact Scotlands People and ask them as it is from their database

Thank you.
I have looked at image again. It is just a list of brides and grooms with dates under the heading of Govan.
There must have been dozens of churches in Govan parish at the time.
Maybe checking with Scotlandspeople is best as you say Rosie.

It was rare for marriages at that time to take place in a church. Most weddings took place either in the bride's home or in the manse of the church the bride attended. Sometimes, outside the cities, it might be in the village hall or even a hotel.

thanks Blanched. Note what you say.

I usually refer to the place of interest on the genuki website for background information, such as type of industries, rivers, trades, churches; e.g. Genuki Govan
This is the webpage for Govan:

Not necessarily in any church, the Govan manse for example!

As others have said, the marriage was unlikely to have taken place in the church itself. This only became common in Scotland in the 20th century.
As to the date given in marriage registers, it varies considerably. Usually it is the date of the "contract" or "booking", when the couple went to the session clerk and said they intended to marry. They were supposed to marry within forty days of that. Sometimes a record also includes the dates on which the banns were read. Sometimes the actual date of the wedding itself is recorded. You can find any one of these, or a combination.
If a single date is given and there is no statement anywhere on the page or in the entries that the date is that of the marriage, best to assume it is the date of the initial contract.
