Title: Malta 1870s

Hi all,

I have a George Wheeler, a Staff Sergeant in the Army Service Corps, deployed to Malta in about 1876 with his new wife and infant daughter.
In 1881 he was back in England.

So, what was the Army doing in Malta at this time, was it a permanent garrison or a short term deployment?

Also whilst in Malta the couple had three more children of whom two died in 1880. Was this a tragiccoincidence or an outbreak of some disease in Malta at this time?

Malta was a vital garrison of the British Empire in the period, mainly for its harbours but also as a staging post in the middle east.
