On the 1861 census, my relative, Robert Brown, born 1823 at Thornage, Norfolk was listed as a Gavier's Porter.  He was living at the Rose And Crown, Crown Street, South Weald, Brentwood, Essex at the time.

Despite googling, I have never been able to ascertain what a Gavier is.

In 1871 he is listed as a Painter and in 1881 he is listed as a Painter and House Agent.

On his marriage certificate in 1862, his occupation is hard to read, but it looks like Furman.

Anyone know what a Gavier is?

Looks more like "grocers porter" to me

Well now you've pointed that out, it does look like Grocer's Porter and would explain why I couldn't find Gavier.  Thanks ShaunJ   ;D

Your Rose and Crown info must come from somewhere else? It's not mentioned on the census.

-
Yes, the fuller address is on Find My Past 1861 census

You are relying on a transcription. NEVER trust a transcription. There is no mention of Rose and Crown on the original image.

Maybe not. But the rest of the address looks legit.  Crown Street etc.
