Hello all
Looking for my wife's aunt Florence Peggy Edwards born late 1921 in Blackburn and soon after, family traditions says, went into an orphanage and was then adopted. I've found case files for the big Blackburn orphanage in Lancashire Archives but no similar names around 1921 in the online list of the files. Does anyone know of other orphanages (and records for them) in Blackburn?
As she was born late in 1921 the census won't help us even when it does come out. And too early for central government adoption records - those start in 1926 I think? Other ideas welcome.

Parents Joseph & Florence nee Hayes married 1919. Florence died 1921 - same qtr as birth
Older sister b 1920 but Florence was a twin. Twin was Peggy H so were all 3 children placed in the orphanage?
Did she marry? If so - did she marry as Edwards? What was her married name?

Hi Carole
Thanks for your reply. The older sister was my wife's mother, now deceased. We have Florence's birth certificate which shows a name change added after registration so Florence Peggy Edwards and Peggy Hayes Edwards are one and the same person - both have the same GRO reference number too. The older sister was brought up by her grandparents but for some reason they didn't take Florence and she went into the orphanage.
I'll have a look for a marriage - though she may not have known her birth surname or even, in those days, that she was adopted.
Hi Rosie - yes, that's her - dob 4/10/1921. The birth cert also carries a note that she was adopted but no date for the addition of this note.
Best wishes, Chris

At birth Peggy Hayes Edwards, later changed to Florence Peggy Edwards.

Depending on when the birth was re-registered - it looks as though the Edwards surname was retained
Am not familiar with the various procedures but she would have been around 5yrs old when the adoption law was introduced. A starting point could be Blackburn Social Services Dept who may be able to help
