Good morning Rootschatters, my ancestors are from South Shields/Westoe and I have been compiling streets that they have lived in. I purchased a South Shields 1895 Ordnance Survey Map and have been highlighting the streets they lived in, however a couple are eluding me and I am hoping that someone may be able to assist me.
An ancestor lived in Bath Street in the 1911 census, I have seen a reference to a Bath Street and also an old photo of Baring Street which had (Bath Street) named afterwards. I am thinking as this was/is quite a long street that originally part of it was Bath Street and the other part was Baring Street and at some stage they renamed the whole street as Baring Street. (this has happened to me with my grandfather in Gateshead, same house but different street names in 2 census).
Barker Terrace 1901 census. I am aware that this will be a row of houses in another named street (as this was quite common) but would anyone know which street and whereabouts in the street.
Frost Street Westoe. 1881 census. Can find no information on this street but have come across a 1891 death where the person lived in Frost Street.
Any help would be appreciated to finish off this project. Many thanks, Paul
With help I have found both Bath Street and Frost Street. If anyone knows which street Barker Terrace was on I would be grateful

The above Link of Historical OS 6" to the Mile Maps, should enable You, to select an area of interest, and street views, over the various decades.

Apologies, it's the OS 25" to the Mile Maps, that provide the Street views.

Frost Street ran parallel to Napier Street and joined Lord Nelson Street. It is on the next map down to that mentioned by Sandblown close to the left-hand edge, just over half way down.

There's a report in the South Shields Gazette, 1 Sep 1897, of the Corporation's purchase the Field House Estate from a Mrs Fairles as part of the Bath Street development.

Many thanks David, found it. I would classify it as Tyne Dock but was probably part of Westoe back then. I have another map that travels further south and it is on that one. One down. Paul

Thanks Sandblown, it looks as though Baring Street, which is on my map, was the only name from the top to the bottom of the street.
Another report states 'There's a report in the South Shields Gazette, 1 Sep 1897, of the Corporation's purchase the Field House Estate from a Mrs Fairles as part of the Bath Street development'. So it looks as though Bath Street came into existance after my 1895 map was published. Paul
Found it, it was on the very edge of my map written in very small letters. Thank you

Many thanks for that, it looks as though I will have to find an newer map than the 1895 map I have. Paul

If your family are at Barker Tce on the 1901 census, have a look at the enumerator’s route and the neighbouring addresses which should lead you to a street or landmark which you should be able to find on a map.
This might help narrow down the location of Barker Tce.

Hi, I live in South Shields and Barker Terrace is part of what is now Westoe Road. It is the block which runs from the corner of Erskine Road up to the Town Hall and the street name is still visible. You can see it on Google Maps, it's on the wall - (just above the opticians).
There's a nice photo of Barker Terrace here -

I've seen an earlier photo from the turn of the century with all shops below and flats/houses above. Did your family own a shop on Barker Terrace? There was also a very large and well known Co op store, on the end closest to the Town Hall.
Bath Street ran directly between Mile End Road and Baring Street. Sadly, none of it has survived as far as I know. It is where Coston Drive is now and runs behind what is now the Morrisons supermarket car park. I think most of it was knocked down in the 60s and whatever was left probably went when the supermarket was built in the 1980s.
It would have been quite a busy, bustling street though with the old railway station and lots of shops, pubs and a theatre nearby.
There is a photo from the 80s which shows the corner of Baring Street and Coston Drive.
It's quite hard to make out but you can just see the street name for Coston Drive above the shop, with the older one for Bath Street above .

Hope that helps a bit!

Researching school admission records I found out that my Grandmother attended the Baring Street school in South Shields. Part of the old school building still exists and this is on the site of Arbeia Roman Fort in South Shields.
This is an old photo I took a few years back. You cant see it too well on the photo but the plaque records 'Baring St School'.
-
River Tyne Lass - My grandmother and her brother and sister also went to Baring Street school, I had no idea the school was still there.
Coincidently, I recently found some fab hardbacked photos of Baring Street infant and junior class groups from 1920. So if your grandmother was there at that time she might be on one of the photos. :)
-
Oh that's a coincidence!
The part school building was there a few years ago and I presume it will still be there but I haven't been over that site since Covid. The building looked as if it was being used as a warehouse. It is on the same ground as the Arbeia Fort.
Unfortunately, my Grandmother was only there between 1907 and 1909. The log books are interesting to read at Tyne and Wear Archives. :)
-
Amendment - this particular plaque records 'Infants' School' but I do believe this is part of the old Baring Street School. I presume the school would have been much bigger at one time.

A joint thank you to Ruskie, Hanes Teulu, Mvann and Lemon Barley for their contributions in locating Barker Terrace and Bath St. I now have more places to visit on my next time up in South Shields. Appreciate all your help. Paul

Hello Lemon Barley, many, many thanks for locating Barker Terrace for me, I would have walked along Westoe Rd. and passed Barker Terrace before without knowing. I also had ancestors who lived on Percy St. and Claypath Lane (with the beautiful Britannia pub) and have taken photos of those streets from Westoe Rd.
Whenever I visit the north east (I'm from Newcastle but have lived in Australia for many years) I spend time in SS/Westoe and take photos of the streets/houses that ancestors lived in (if they still exist) or where they used to be. You get a nice feeling when you walk on the same footpaths as your ancestors did. With the family tree expanding there are always new streets to discover and photo (hence the question).
I was once told that if you are walking around a cemetery where ancestors are buried then photograph all the gravestones with family names on them. I have walked around all of Westoe & Harton cemeteries (some feat) and have over 100 photos, out of them over a dozen (at the moment) are of ancestors.
I have been through South Tyneside council old photos, would never have found the Westoe Rd./Barker Terrace one as it comes under Westoe Rd. I had seen the one for Baring St (Bath St) and that is why I thought it might have originally been part of Baring Rd. now I know. No family owned business on Barker Terrace, just an ancestor living in one of the flats.
Helped a bit? it has helped a lot, I appreciate it.
Paul
