Hello All!
I am new to this and this probably a long shot but I am after some help on the Caswell Family, originating in Wiltshire.
Listed below are my findings so far (dates and locations included if I have them). Please feel free to add or correct me as I may have got lines crossed over:
John Caswell m. Elizabeth Flower (b.1719)
Their children:
Richard (b. 1742)
Mary (b. 1744)
John (b.1747)
Ann (b.1749)
William (b.1751)
Mary (b.1761)
My line follows down from William Caswell (1751) who m. Mary Brewer
Their Children:
Nanny? (b.1765)
William (b.1772)
Richard (b. 1787)
Phoebe
Again my line descends from William Caswell (1772) who m. Ann Neate (1769)
Their Children:
William (b.1790 - d. 1868)
Thomas (b.1793)
Ann (b.1795)
Mary Ann (b.1796) (likely the same child as above)
Henry (b. 1798)
James (b. 1800)
John (b. 1803)
Ann (b. 1807)
Again following down from William (1790-1868) who m. Mary Morse (1792 - 1866)
My line continues from their child George Caswell (1833 - 1892) who m. Sarah Ann Huntley (1839 - 1910)
and their child, my GGG-Grandfather John Caswell who Married Amelia Riddick.
Can anybody validate or add to this? I'd love to go further back if anyone has more information, I have read of Caswells in Ireland, America and Canada but have not linked them to my family as of yet..
Any support is much appreciated, thanks for reading!

Hiya Ashley and a warm welcome to Rootschat
not all trees are correct - so you will have to judge for yourself if they are
.................................................
John Caswell
Born 28 July 1707 - Bishops Cannings, Wiltshire, England
Deceased 4 January 1788 - Cherhill, Wiltshire, England, aged 80 years old
.............................................................
Elizabeth Flower
Born in 1709
Deceased 16 October 1787, aged 78 years old
.......................................................................
so
you have to decide whether the tree is right - you have Elizabeth Flower b 1719 - the tree has 1709
you see my point ?
.................
the tree owner - she only has Ann Caswell b 1749 - no siblings - so I presume that is her line - BUT - you have Mary Caswell b 1761 - meaning Elizabeth Flower gave birth at 52 ???
so
one of you is wrong
this is what happens with Familytrees - you have to scrutinise them

a bit of info on Ann Caswell b 1749 you may not have

it appears that all of John and Elizabeths children were born in Cherhill ,Wiltshire ?
so - was John Casswell born there ??
this is interesting - the original surname may have been KISSEL
William Casswell ( Kissel ) b 1648 Cherhill ,Wiltshire
deceased 17th August 1706 Cherhill
https://gw.geneanet.org/keefran?n=caswell+kissel&oc=&p=will
ADDED
John Kissel married Rebbecah Maryne 8th September 1656 , Steeple Ashton ,Wiltshire
Kissel looks to be a German name from the Hessen area

Welcome to rootschat :)

Just tracking backwards ..
William Caswell married Mary Morse on 21 Feb 1814 at Ogbourne St George. An online tree has William & Mary on census in Ogbourne in 1861 where do you have them in 1841 & 1851

Thanks for all the help and information you have provided Garstonite, maybe I have my wires crossed somewhere then! I will have to work back and figure out where I have gone wrong.
I have a baptism for Elizabeth Flower in 1719, but haven't found a birth so i've put it as about 1719. However there are a few others in this area around the same time so maybe I picked up on the wrong one?
In regards to John, there is a baptism on the 30th July 1710 in Wiltshire, Parents listed as Richard and Esther Caswell however I am unsure if this is my one or if I am even on the right line so I haven't added it yet.
Interesting regarding the potential Kissel origin as I thought the Caswell name dated quite far back although I could be wrong.
Again, thank you for your help with my research.

Hi Rosie99,
I am unable to find them in any census except the 1861, I am quite stuck on this line of my family at the moment so I am hoping someone else has found something more concrete than what I am currently working with.
I do have an 1851 Census which has a William Caswell, in Ogbourne, the age adds up to the d.o.b I have however his wife on this census is Jane so I am not too sure if this my one or not sadly.
I will keep looking and post back if I find anything more
Thanks for you help

I think as CARTWELL in 1841
Born Wiltshire, England
St George Ogbourne
William Cartwell 50 . A labourer.
Mary Cartwell 45
Thomas Cartwell 15
Jane Cartwell 10
George Cartwell 8
All born county

Hi Sue,
Thanks for this, perhaps this is why I am unable to find them in 1841 or 51. I have no Idea why they would be listed as Cartwell but the family names and ages roughly line up. I'll see what I can dig up based on the name Cartwell.
Thanks for your assistance

That looks good Sue and also puts George with the family :). Looking at other entries on that page I think it says Castwell

Living in Aldbourne Wiltshire. 1851
Piece 1686
Folio 568
Page Number 17
G. CASSWELL. (my reading)
On the original image the double s is formed in the old fashioned way which resembles a lower case f.
A trap when one is not used to it. ::)
It has been transcribed as CAPWELL, but I think this is wrong.
Does anyone have any thoughts on it?
This man is aged 17 Born on Ogbourn St Geo. and is a groom in a household headed by Thomas Kenson, a farmer of 500 acres.
Census 1851 possibility for some other family members
Piece 1838
Folio 114
Page Number 29
Living at Ogbourn St George.
William CASWELL, Head aged 60. Ag Lab. born Overton Wilt.
Jane CASWELL, wife aged 21
And a lodger
Errors in census reportings are common. I would venture to suggest that Jane is not wife, but daughter to William. See 1841.
Next door but one to William is -
Thomas CASWELL. Head aged 25. Ag Lab. born Ogbourn St Geo.
Eliza Ann CASWELL. Wife aged 23. Born Ogbourn St Geo.
Henry . Son aged 3.

G. CASSWELL. (my reading)
I don't think that there is any doubt that entry is George, FindMyPast have it as Casswell :)
I also agree about the family with Jane being the daughter though I can't see Mary anywhere, possibly staying overnight and helping out with family and not listed .

Thanks for this Sue,
I never knew about the old fashioned double s resembling a lower case f so i'll keep that in mind during my research.
I would agree that must be an error in the record as his daughter Jane was born in 1830 which puts her at 21 in the 1851 census.
The family next door but one are, Williams Son Thomas who married Eliza Ann Simms. Their son Henry was born in 1848, which again makes the ages line up, I was unable to find these so thanks for your help!

Richard Green of West kennet in Wiltshire.
died in 1725. Not sure of his birth place. And Ann Caswell b. 1736 Avebury in Wiltshire. Also researching : Cook and Beake of Avebury and Marlborough .
