I am researching Samuel Arnott (1852-1930) and have information on his political career and also his work as a botanist. I note however that some reports claim he was a scientist but cannot verify this, so any evidence to support this claim would be most welcome. I also have not been able to establish where he was buried as I have not been able to gain access to the library records at present. Finally could anyone confirm that Arnott Terrace in Troqueer is named in his honour. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

His death certificate gives him as a retired baker. This is also shown on the census records that I've looked at.
The 1901 has him as a JP, living on own means and a journalist.
His obit in The Scotsman (19 Feb 1930) says that he was a well-known authority on gardening, specialising in alpine plants and he regularly contributed to horticultural journals. He was a fellow of the RHS and a member of the scientific committee of the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society.
I've not found any information about him being academically trained.

The death certificate and the newspaper obit give the same date and location, so it is the same person - i.e. he was a retired baker :-\
Add - also Provost of Maxwelltown for a considerable time.

BillionGraves has headstone for Mary Anne Kinstry wife of Samuel Arnott and their daughter at St Mary's Churchyard, Dumfries. The above article says he remarried Elizabeth McMinn (nee Clark).

Many thanks for all the help regarding Samuel Arnott- this has taken me much further in my research I have however run it to a problem with Samuel Arnott( 1787? to 1867) and his wife Elizabeth Colle. According to John Arnott death certificate Samuel and his wife were both alive in 1858. I have however not been able to find a death certificate for Elizabeth or find the family on census returns. There are a number of Arnotts but none seem to fit the picture. I must be missing something but appear to have run into a brick wall

Elizabeth, Samuel's wife, maiden name looks to have lots of variants:
1824 Elizabeth www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYMG-G31
1828 James www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYMG-7XJ
1831 Sarah www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYLR-J98
Is the John you mention one of their sons?

From what I was seeing earlier. I think daughter Sarah moved to Liverpool at some time after her marriage. Husband Samuel's death reg should also confirm his status as widowed at the time of his death, although from what you mention, Elizabeth's death details certainly confirm it's Elizabeth Callie.

many thanks to all for assistance. John Arnott is the son of Samuel Arnott and Elizabeth ( Callie?)He died 25/2/1858 aged 39 and is buried in St Mary's Churchyard in Dumfries. It is possible that the memorial has been destroyed but the burial place is recorded on the Death Certificate. There is a fragment of a memorial showing the death of John's son Samuel's first wife and his daughter and this may be all that remains of the original memorial but , as yet, I have not looked into the matter in greater detail

John Arnott's tombstone is intact in St Mary's Churchyard in Dumfries and contains his grave, and that of his wife Nicholas Richardson, together with a number of their children.
-
Great that you have that confirmation now.
