Heya, everyone. I've been trying to find information on a certain Martha Stone. No birth date. She married by license Henry Legassicke (1716-1763) in Wimbish, Essex, on 12 February 1740. He is described as "joiner of Cripplegate" and she described simply as "of Cambridge." I know the first census of England was in 1801, which might reveal some relatives in the area, but the only census I can find on Family Search is from 1841.

The first genealogically useful census was the 1841.
Some information here:
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/England_Census
Have you looked for wills as a way to determine if there were Stones in Cambridge in that time frame? Of course it doesn’t necessarily follow that you will be able place your Martha with any of them.
Presumably you have looked at parish registers of births? Though, of course, there maybe several possible Martha Stones.
Someone else is sure to have some suggestions for you.

Ah, thanks Ruskie. That makes sense as to why 1841 is the only one I could find on FS. Going to see if they have parish registers on there that might be of help.

You might find some parish registers on Freereg too. :)

I don’t know how extensive this collection is:

Thank you. :) Will have a look. Have you had better experience with Freereg? And is it free like the name implies? ;D

Yes, FreeReg is free! :D

Excellent site which is being added to all the time.
Having a quick look though, I can't see a likely Martha STONE in Cambridge. Her marriage is there, and I note it says she is of "St Edwards, Cambridge" - some further info about the parish here:
https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Cambridge_St_Edward_King_and_Martyr,_Cambridgeshire_Genealogy
Note that familysearch has baptisms transcribed for St Edwards for only various years in the time period you are probably looking at, not sure why that should be, possibly damaged or missing registers? Some one more knowledgeable may have the answer.

Though Bishops Transcripts are available, though not on-line at this stage

Maybe contact the Cambridgeshire Family History Society, or if there is a Family History Library near you , you may be able to view the fiche.

Oh, fantastic, thank you! That's a good idea, messaging the family history society. I'll do that, I think. I've been able to find help with brick walls that way before.
