I thought this would be an easy bit - what I thought was an unusual name! How wrong can one be? I have shortlisted my 3x Great Grandfather to 2. A) Joel Crookes born 1804 parents Isaac and Ann and B) Joel Crookes born 1810 parents Benjamin and Nancy. Both baptised Bradfield, abode Oughtibridge.
I settled on the 1810, all the pieces seemed to fit - marriage, daughter, wife’s death 1841 census; until I found someone else on Ancestry settled on the older one, the only good reason I can see for this is the marriage date of 1825. I have found that fathers Isaac and Benjamin are brothers, so at least the 5x Great Grandfather is right.
My problem is I cannot find any more about Joel 1804 other than his Baptism. I have one marriage, one 1841 census, one 1851 census and a death in 1859, all attributed to ‘my’ 1810 Joel (although could be the other one!). I have searched the parish register scan to the end 1812 and found no death, although I found one for a sister to Joel 1804. There is another Joel in the area 1813-1862, who I have ruled out.
Any more thoughts please?

Hi, If I'm reading your post correct the 1810 Joel Crookes appears on the 1851 census aged 41 as unmarried with his Brother George 45 and mother Ann aged 78 a widower.

From the GRO, it would appear that the 1859 death was for Joel aged 49 (upheld by the burial record), which fits with the 1810 baptism, BUT did he really marry in 1825 at the age of 15 :-\ Nothing in the parish register to suggest that he was a minor.
Perhaps purchase of the 1859 death certificate might help to solve it. :-\

Baptism record for 1810 show Joel Crooks, son of Isaac Crooks of Oughtibridge, baptised 4 March 1810, no date of birth shown for this particular entry (unlike others in the same month).
1804 baptism is Joel son of Benjamin of Oughtibridge.

Thank you for your replies. John 1851 census is the one I have, unmarried could be the same as having no wife ie widower. Brother George and mother Ann are as 1841.
BumbleB yes, the 15 year old marriage was my stumbling block, although legal age was 14 for boys. I have found a death of a John Crookes, Bradfield 1828 age 25 - the only matching baptism 1802 has a death 1803 - so possible, although the entry is beautifully written and it does say John.
Just caught your second post - these are the 2 in my shortlist.

BumbleB, I took another look at the scan - in the gloom on the right hand side of the page it says born 9 Feb.

I this case kaththe 1851 census shows his brother George as a widower so really do believe Joel was "unmarried"

John, you have a valid point. Another problem, both Joel and George married Sarahs! The death of Sarah in 1834 I had attributed to Joel's wife, but now I have access to the scan, I see it is George's wife. There is another burial 1837, but that is John Crookes wife. I cannot find a death for Joel's Sarah, or suitable census entries.
I also made the assumption that the 10 year old Mary in 1841 Isaac's census was Mary Ann Joel's daughter with Sarah. She is my relative, and was married to Adam Eaton by 1851. Dinah, the other 10 yr old is Isaac's grandaughter, by his daughter Ann.

Is this the birth and baptism of your ancestor Mary Anne Crookes.

Hi Kath
I think you will find that Joel's wife, Sarah Ashton remarried on the 11th October 1835. She married Thomas Broad (Broadhead) at Rotherham. They had children - William 31 Aug 1836, Thomas 1838 (mother's maiden name Ashton), Maria 1841 plus others. In 1841 they are in Ecclesall Bierlow with your Mary, who is down as Broadhead (aged 10). I think Joel must have been buried at Masbrough Independent Chapel on 4 Jun 1834 (NBI). The entry is just "Crookes" with no forename, but it seems a good fit. If you look for Thomas Broadhead on the 1851 census, you will see that he was born in Masbrough and Mary Anne was baptised in a non-conformist chapel.
I am descended from Joseph Crookes born abt. 1775 in Bradfield - actually twice - from two of his daughters!

Thank you for your response. A bit to think about. I am going to be away for a few days, then I will look at this information again and put all the pieces together in my records. There had to be an answer, so again thanks for letting me know.

I have now had time to think and look at my records. I agree with you - no way I couldn't! the marriage of Sarah Crookes and the maiden name on birth records are pretty convincing. I have now worked out that the Sarah Crookes who died was the 1810 Joel's brother George's wife, and the resident daughter Mary age 10 in 1841 was his daughter.
I have now swapped my Joels and can move on. I don't have your Joseph on my records, so I may just take a look for him.
